I'm working on a script for my new act, and I plan to add a knife thru coat in this act, so.....
Since this is the ''funny'' section of the Café..... what additional lines and gag that you can add to make the knife thru coat routine become more Funnier? Here is my research has come up so far : -stick your thumb out of the hole in the jacket -produce various cutlery from the jacket pocket -produces a shovel/spade from behind the jacket -put a securyty tag in in spectator jacket as part of the routine Anymore guys?........some funny lines or visual gag? Thank you for writing |

I'm not sure if the trick is still on the market, but Ted Amberg used to sell a comedy effect called "Drill Through Coat" in which a power drill pierces the borrowed jacket. It's a very funny (and very deceptive) routine that I use in my adult comedy show with great success.

What I am saying is to bulk the effect out, maybe it needs showmanship not more magic...

Ok I'll toss a few food for thought ideas out!
Think of a conflict...you need his jacket, how are you going to get it...how can you make getting his jacket off him funny..create a scenario where you need to borrow his jacket. Maybe one idea...do a short thumb cuff routine, using his jacket as cover...put his thumbs in the cuffs as his and your hands are under the jacket and ask him to sit down as you steal/use his jacket. Why are going to be putting a knife through? Think of situational gags he's tied up, you've got his jacket. Maybe borrow a bill from his wallet while he's tied up. I can't think of an alternative premise yet than...look I'm gonna put it through ya jacket sucka! I'll think. M:C the Cowman. J:M cowboy |

Perhaps the jacket is ill fitting, you used to do a bit of tailoring and you will make a few sartorial adjustments, for free.

Thank You for the ideas gentlemen.......
Here is my motivation....... I'll plan to add the knife thru coat routine in my 3rd phase of pickpocket act I'll tell a story that some pickpocket dare to cut or slice the pocket or bag of his victim to take their personal belongings....to do that in a crowded places, the pickpocket must be able to slice trough the ''Target'' pocket wiithout looking....so let me illustrate that I'll borrow the jacket....i'll comment about how nice the jacket is....ask them where he stole the jacket....because there is a security tag still attach to the jacket.......i check the jacket pocket only to find lots of spoon and other cutlery.....then I show them the knife.....i show them a canvas sheet with the target practice printed on it....then I stab the knife thru the coat but miss the target....in this point I continue on with the knife thru coat routine... I might end this with the missing spades by producing a shovel from the jacket....and blame it on them of stealing a shovel from someplace Soooooo...........back to my original post..... Any FUNNY IDEAS OR VISUAL GAG that you guys might contribute to this routine??? Anyone...... |

How about this:
Pull a fork (or forks) out of the coat; drop on the floor as you say: "That's not a knife..." Pull a spoon (or spoons) out of the coat, saying: "That's not a knife..." Pull a dinner knife out of the coat, saying: "[i]That's[i/] not a knife...", then reach behind your own coat and pull a very large knife out of the back of your belt, saying (perhaps in your best 'Crocodile Dundie' accent): "Now THAT'S a knife!" When Matt was talking about motivation for putting the knife through the jacket I started thinking about the priest from Father Ted who destroys everything to prove how shoddy the workmanship is. It is a very character driven premiss but maybe something could be gleaned from it.

Thomas....niceeeee!......

Any more Funny ideas gentlemen??? And george....I think your idea with the priest character is out of place from minr...thanx for writing |

Check out (the much missed) Bob Read's Knife Through Coat routine which he sold as a separate manuscript in 1991. He's got some great gags: for instance where he pulls out part of the lining; he uses a bulldog clip to put on the guy's coat so he can't see the 'tear'; pretends he's brushing down the victim's coat when in fact he's brushing his.

I remember a great final gag where the magician puts a large sticker over the 'hole' and then has the spectator put the jacket on. He then removes the sticker showing the jacket is OK.
The spectator pulls off the jacket as quick as possible to check the jacket which gets a huge laugh. The magician, whose name I forget, actually cues the spectator to take off the jacket, whispering under his breath. It looks impromptu but it ain't! |

Putting a knife through someones coat has its own built in humor and suspense. I would make sure you play up those points with great facial contortions and grimaces.
