Performing a few tricks has been mentioned as a great way of getting clients when you meet new people. That made me wondering what type of tricks to chose if you want to work at childrens parties.
Let's say that you meet parents without their children. Should you perform the same type of tricks you perform at the kid party show, or should you perform more adult types of tricks. In the first situation they might think the situation is too childish and decide not to hire you. In the second situation they might think that the tricks are too advanced for children, and decide not to hire you. See what I mean? |

My experience has been that many times when you perform closeup for an adults-only group, one of them will usually say something like "Oh, my son would love this!", indicating that many adults feel that magic is mainly for kids. (Not a sentiment I agree with, but one you encounter frequently.)
Having said that, I would recommend sponge balls as a good all-purpose effect that will fool and entertain adults, but would obviously show you can entertain kids, too. Also consider the Mental Photography deck, Professor's Nightmare- anything strong and visual that fits in your pocket. |

A great book that deals with this exact thing is Joel Bauer's How To Persuade People Who Don't want To Be Persuaded. Granted, the book is mainly for corpprate workers, but you can easily apply the effects to whatever situation you're in.
