I don't think Tarbell teaches the pop-off knot (from a square knot). In V2 it teaches the Panama Rope Mystery, but it does not have them pop off. I've seen the square knot -> pop off knot in just two places(Del Wilson's 12 Gospel Tricks w/rope, and the Ency of Rope). Knot sure why?
As to purchasing the Tarbell series, I recommend all 8 volumes. You can get them heavily discounted if used. Watch for Paul Diamonds email list of used magic. The Tarbell series pops-up a few times a year. John

Although the pop-off knot was not in Tarbell's description of the Panama Rope, and not even in Ted Collin's own instructions, it was part of the routine and you can see Jim Gerrish using it the same way Ted taught it to his students in the aforementioned DVD. It appears to be a square knot (but of course, it's not!), because all the other knots used in the routine are square knots.
John: I can't find a reference to the square knot pop-off knot in the Rope Encyclopedia. Do you have a page number for it? I have misplaced my Volume 2 of Tarbell (again!) so I can't look it up there either. If you can give me a page reference, I'll see if it bears a resemblance to the one Ted Collins used.

On page 115, as part of the "Shaggy Dog Panama", a noose is created by tying a square knot, "A" in fig 195. Unfortunately it is not described in much detail, and many may miss how to turn it into a pop-off knot, but fig 198 shows all the knots popping off (the middle one appears to have be created differently, fig 188). I'm surprised to just hear all this talk. I've been posting about this type of pop-off with the Panama Rope trick for a couple of years now. Yet, with all the rope books & dvds, I've only seen it in two references, Del Wilson's 12 Gospel Tricks with rope, and the Ency of Rope (but for such a fine effect, it is barely mentioned). Knots Off

That is cuz it isn't a pop knot it is an untie knot as the routine is a glorified cut and restored routine.

From the description in the Rope Encyclopedia, I believe that Ted Collins' simulated square knot pop-off is different. Perhaps someday I will be able to get the Collins family's permission to explain why.

I remember getting a dozen of the panama instructions from Ted, as a courtesy trade-off for some goods I sold him. I totally ignored it for so many years. He never let on that it was in Tarbell and a classic. We all took him for granted. He showed the Jersey clown and magic club the routine every time we went there.
