Does anyone have any suggestions for a strong closing effect in an adult comedy show? I am looking for something that is amazing enough to make an impression that people will talk about, but is also really funny. I think the Human Phone Number could fit the bill, but it seems awkward to have a bunch of volunteers on stage for the closing effect. Any ideas?
Thanks, Rob |

The Kellar Rope Tie played just right works really well.

Thanks Nucinud. I know that the Kellar rope tie can be funny, but I'm not familiar with the entire routine. I think you have to have volunteers on stage during the performance. Is that correct?

Rob,
Presentation, presentation, presentation. Pick something basic from your rep and work on it until it's your closer. We, as performers, often forget the impact of tricks we have been doing for a while. torn corner card effect? What about invisible deck? Using a TT to make a bill disappear and appear in an impossible location? Out of this world? Put away the wallet and get to work! peter |

Wise words Peter...
Several years ago there was a thread on Magic Buying as an Addiction. Suggestions include Journalling with The Artist Way by Cameron. Look at the theme of your show Look at your audience Look at the time of the year My shows are usually closed with an appropriate song sang Ventriloquilly(sic) and range from: We wish you a merry xmas to...Can't smile without you. (the later was added after my wonderful wife continued to suggest it... Years ago I used to close with my Strait Jacket or Fire Eating...The jacket is still in some programs while the heat has left the Doctor of Laughology Programs..other than talking about the routine... I think that the vanishing bottle trick is a great closer. The presentation can be made funny (as Fielding West for example does) and people will definately remember it and you, if the trick is played right.
Invisible deck could also work as a great closer as mentioned above. If you haven't seen Bill Malone's presentation, check it out! |

I've always liked the idea of vanishing something substantial at the end of a show. Produce it at the beginning and vanish it at the end, feels like good bookends.

Peter,
Your point about presentation is well taken. It's important for performers to remember it's not what you do, but how you do it that counts. This is something I need to keep in mind about all of the effects in my show so I can keep improving the entire show, not just the finale. Harris, My wife would probably agree that I have a magic buying addiction, but she does the same with shoes. How many shoes does one person with two feet need? Maybe I unwittingly married a very good looking a millipede. I think Siamese twins should be able to get by with eight pairs. Why does my wife need 16 pairs? And she's going to say I buy too many tricks? She's going to need to start turning tricks to pay for her shoe habit. Actually I don't really buy very many new tricks, and the ones I do buy I almost always use (sooner or later). Maybe I really do have a magic buying addiciton and I'm in denial, but I'm comfortable in my neurotic bliss, so just let me be happy. Is it wrong that buying magic tricks makes me happy? I could be spending the measley $10 I didn't tell her someone tipped me with on alcohol, cigarettes or a really ugly crack wh*r*, but no, I spend it on magic tricks to make little kids happy. Is that so wrong? Really? Seriously, I just want a new effect for my stand up show because I'm getting a little bored and want something fresh to keep things new. That's my rationale, and I'm sticking to it. |

Yes I still buy new things..Otherwise I wouldn't have a box of 100 Sensormatic tags on my dungeon table. (Actually I sold about 12 of them at the last Ring Meeting.
I also bring things back into the light..Such as the This and That Scarves. This season I will use them to again produce my melodica....and play... Oh Chanukah Bush Oh Chanuka Bush As a person with low beta waves...I lose interest in things as well....Acting...like it is the first time a joke is created..or an effect shared...that's real magic.... Shalom... and happy HOYC...(holiday of your choice) Harris

Harris,
Thanks for sharing. Have you ever considered following up "Oh Chanukah Bush" with Adam Sandler's "The Chanuka Song"? It would be funny to do that with the puppet singing all of the laugh lines... Best Holiday Wishes! Magic Rob |

I couldn't agree more about Presentation. It's not about buying the latest and greatest trick, it's about having them remember YOU!!!! A good friend of mine closes with blowing a bubble and making it solid..simple trick..but his presentation makes the effect. I want my last trick to feature me, no audience volunteers, just me. Just my 2 cents...

Rob...How are things in Denver..I had a great time a few years ago checking out the magic shops while visiting my sister in law in Highland Ranch.
Great idea...Sandlers song is funny...but is not in the public domain....(at least I don't think so..) New idea...Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Parody... All of the other Reindeers used laugh and call him names. They wouldn't let him play reindeer games.. Then one foggy xmas eve..the ACLU Came to say.. No Reindeer Left Behind ....a suit in court to.....day. "Roses are Redish Violets are Bluish..... (fill in your own 3rd line The whole world would be Jewish.. "(from a fan of Marti and Rossi Poems)

Personally...I like to have my closers turn out to be a "Call-back" of some sort.

Harris,
Things are great here in Denver. You should come out for another visit and go skiing. Your song parodies are great! I'm sure they make your ventriloquism act very comical. Maybe you should consult for Weird Al. My favorite recent Weird AL parody is a "You're Pitiful" based on the James Blunt hit "You're Beautiful". It can be heard free here: http://www.weirdalforum.com/private/yourepitiful.mp3 If I ever find a place in my magic act for a song parody, Harris I'm going to hire you to write it. Best, Magic Rob |

Kyle,
Thanks for reminding me about the importance of using call backs. It's a great way to bring things full circle and close the show. |

No Prob Rob! I love call backs whenever necessary...The comptition act I do uses a great comedic call back that I organized with the last minute help of my friend Bob Sanders!
You're right though...they are a fabulous way to bring everything back around and they are the perfect setup for an ending. |
