I've hogged this discussion enough. But the way I seem it there are three types of people we can fit into
1) You support renting companies and use them 2) You are indifferent to the whole thing 3) You do not support the business model and feel its a bad direction for the magic market to move towards. The first two types of opinion help the renting companies continue, only the Third option works against what they are doing. The real danger is indifference. That is why I personally feel that if you personally think what they are doing is wrong, you should let them know that you feel that it is unacceptable. Be polite and legal. Email them, tell your friends within magic about how you feel. Don't advertise any specific company in general, but let the magic community around you know that this kind of way of selling magic to you, is in your personal opinion wrong. And in the words of Forrest Gump - 'that's all I have to say about that' BTW, I've just come back from doing a society wedding booking. Massive affair on a huge budget with the press attending. There was a traffic accident on the way ( I was not involved) but it made me half an hour late, so I rang the emergency contact number on my contract. I later found out at the end of the booking that the groom, had switched his new mobile off, but only onto standby. They were just saying their 'I do's) when his mobile rang!!! When he told me I was REALLY embarrased, but it turned out the whole congregation laughed, and it broke the 'nerves' and everyone, even the bride, found it funny. Lesson learnt. Make sure you check WHO that emergency number gets through too. Best wishes and good luck with your magic Dominic

This is so stupid I cant even believe what nerve they have.
All this from the people who brought us ``free magic dvd`s in the mail, watch it and return it to us for another..FREE`` What a joke this company is. I haven't read this entire topic but I am sure I am not the only one that feels this way. Actual Photo!? are you F!"/$%?&* kidding me.. idiots.... get out of the magic business and do us all a favor |

What everyone seems to forget is that this is entirely a moot point.
Literally ANY magic DVD is available for immediate download for FREE. Yes - any commercial DVD is CURRENTLY available for download instantly with zero charge. Why would someone pay for a 'rental' DVD service - copy the DVD and return - when they could do all of this for free ? If their intentions are nefarious to begin with - surely this is the route they would take ? The bigger challenge facing magic is the internet & piracy - something which Hollywood & the record companies continue to grapple with. Something is going to give ... |

Well, depending on the country you live in I guess, but this rule of thumb applies in the U.S. of A. So law abiding sorts who are willing to rent magic DVDs are a different group than those willing to download them for free. And keep in mind that everyone does not have high speed internet (I did not have it at home myself until a month or two ago).

This discussion is going nowhere.
If this company remains in business it is because MAGICIANS support it. Just like magic clubs are supported by Magicians. BTW Domenic, magic clubs have bills to pay. They get their revenue from members. They offer this material for "resource" purposes only(wink wink) as an incentive to become members. Bottom line, is in either case I'm learning secrets by becoming a member of either establishment. The creator is not getting any revenue. That seems to be your major concern, Domenic. And please tell me if the Magic Castle is a non-profit organization? I don't believe so. If it is a for profit organization then it is a commercial concern. So whatever your point of view is they will remain in business as long as they make money. There is nothing that can be done about it until the law changes. Do you really think that you will change anybodys mind if they decide to use this service? I think not. Ethics is up to the individual. And BTW what about the ethics of creators. Do you think it is ethical to not disclose that you need additional items that will cost you above and beyond what the dvd cost you? This disclosure is only after you have bought and viewed the DVD. There is an item right now that has a warning about performing this effect. This disclosure is only mentioned when the dvd is played. No mention of this on the label. Do you think that's ethical? I might not have bought it if I had read the warning first. As I mentioned before, lets clean up our own backyard before we try and clean someone elses backyard. I have enjoyed this discussion though.
Magic is a vanishing art.

Nobody has argued that renting dvd's is not legal, but my opinion is that it is bad for the ability of independent creators to produce professional quality magic dvd's as it removes the ability of the creator to recoup the production costs, and if it became the established method of distributiuon, would mean only individuals with a large private income to use on the project, could make a professional production, like for example David Stones award winning DVD 'Real secrets of professional close-up magic' . As a democracy, we have the right to argue that a law is wrong or damaging to a community. We also have the right to let out peers know how we feel about it and to as a group make it clear to a companies that we do not like its behaviour. Quote:
As I mentioned before, lets clean up our own backyard before we try and clean someone elses backyard. I agree, however what about companies that do not want to clean their backyards? If as a community we all insist that everyone keeps their backyards tidy, we all move forward together. We all know streets where everyone makes an effort, but maybe one house or landlord does not want to play along. The whole street suffers. That's one of the benifits of community, we all work together to make each individual respect the work of others.

I believe ethics ARE up to the individual. btw, this idea is a sham and part of the reason the most creative people in magic don't create more. There are just too many people who want to steal from them and too few people who want to stop them. |

Thanks guys.
BTW sorry everyone for my poor spelling and grammer, Why does this site not have a spelling checker? Or does it have one just I just don't know about? I've written most of these posts right after bookings, so I probably rush too much on the back of the performing buzz and a lot of diet red bulls I'm flying out to Berlin today for a three day booking, so will no longer be able to post. I think I've said all I wanted to anyway, and my opinion is now 'on record'. I've enjoyed this discussion. Thank you. Wishing you all the best with your magic Dominic

I'm gonna teach these guys a lesson by renting all the DVD's, converting them to mpeg video and uploading them to the sharing networks. That way nobody will rent them anymore.
BTW... Oprah is backing Obama. It's because they both have names the start with O and are 5 letters long right? Or is she just for young guys? The most important thing to remember is that the guys renting these videos are relying on the magic Café to spread the word about their site, since it's so scandalous. You're all doing them a BIG favor. I would have never heard of it otherwise. |
