Hey, Guys:

I got a call today from a prospective client who initially asked about booking my services for an upcoming birthday party. From the client's tone, I gathered that she was quite interested; she asked about a deposit, wondered if I accepted bookings with a credit card, etc. No problems with the price I quoted.

Then she started asking about other services: Did I decorate, would I provide a cake, could I offer face painting? It sounded like the client wanted to buy a "party in a box," with no parental involvement other than funding the soiree. Based on the caller's telephone area code/prefix, money wasn't a concern. When I explained that I don't provide cake and so forth, it felt as though the lead went cold.

I've had the occasional call asking about balloons or facepainting, but never one where I was essentially asked to handle the whole event. Anybody else getting this kind of inquiry?

Yes! These are the services of an event planner rather than just talent. The talent is usually hired.

We had an event planner speak to Ring 35 a few months back.

For many decades I had worked through agents but event planners are contractors.

I've met some good ones.

You might want to have a relationship with a "preferred" event planner already set up. You will get the occasional referral from them, and give the occasional referral to them. You may even offer them a commission or finder's fee, and ask for none from them. You'll come out ahead.

Trying to add all the requested services for a client like you mentioned, you'll get bogged down in details and open yourself up to an aspect of the business that's prone to MUCH more fussing and fault-finding from cranky customers, and requires much more hand-holding for even the best of them.

I have done a $9,000 birthday where they wanted the kid to appear, float, and be cut in half.... It was a mini magic show as him as the assistant....

But no cake or balloons!

We have a local magician here (not me) who does magic, balloons, and stops and picks up the birthday cake on the way to the event. The parents have to call and reserve the cake.

Curtis, for 9 grand I would have done a show every day for two or three months. Sounds like one of Britney Spears kids - magic, but no cake or balloons - but cigarettes for everone!!

Parents/party host in LA, and in the OC they drop lots of cash on events... Sometimes higher and flashier the price better the better!

I performed at a wedding reception where I was paid $6,100 to make the bride and groom appear.....

I figured this out long time ago, if I cut my lovely assistant in half they might pay me $1,500 -$2,500 for the show... But, now if I cut, float or make the guest of honor magically appear, they will pay almost any price under ten thousand

Hence, why I have three different type of levitation and four different types of appearances for each different situation I have encountered.... and now I am ordering a pole lev for this upcoming event...... weweweweww
