My case tha I use all the time is a make up case that looks just like the Malloy caes but it cost me $25.00 and not $70.00 plus shipping. I use it all the time it fits everywhere I need to go and carries everything I need (rope, card, coins, etc) just go to target or wal mart and you will find it cheapier. you canalso use the metal case that the poker sets come in now. I use that for my close up act.

I have several of the well loved Husky Aluminum case from Home Depot, but my close-up items live in a rolling nylon bag I got from Michaels.
I to suggest working from your pockets. If you need to carry cups and balls, get a wine bottle bag and find a way to strap it to your belt.
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

I use the HCL holster. It is like a gun holster only for magicians . It costs about 300 bucks and is very well made. It's the best idea I have seen and I wish I had thought of it. It means your suit hangs well and your pockets are not full of crap. Go to High Calibre magic web sit and check it out. I use it for close up and under a jacket on the street. If you were a good suit it's a must. Holds everything I use but the cups.
One the cup front I just go the silver gazzos and babes and copper cups made -more soon |

I really agree with those who say they prefer to work out of there pockets and leave the case hidden behind the bar or wherever. It's just way too much of a hassle at every single table. There might not be room to set it down, you don't want people nosing around in it instead of watching you etc. I use 2 cases and just had one of them totally refinished. It is an antique Dr. bag that is quite authentic. When I found it at a flea market 8 years ago, I found the inside was speckled with dried blood and even a very rusty old syringe. Well, needless to say the whole thing was sterilized. The syring was in a leather zipper pouch that was in great shape and PERFECTLY holds a set of cups. I just had someone put on a new zipper, re-dye it and shine it up and it looks brand new. It looks very classy when walking in an establishment. However, it remains hidden until I go to a table after dinner and am going to do the cups and bring it with me.

There are a couple essays in The Books Of Wonder Volume 2 that talk about this.

I use a leather briefcase and magician Marc Sebern gave me a wonderful tip- each trick (that can fit) goes into and comes out of it's own ziplock plastic sandwich bag. After a gig, just bag up the essential props for each trick (so for card to mouth for example- one would put the marker and the deck in that bag, etc.)
I don't always have the discipline to put stuff away like that after a gig, but when I do, it sure makes your next gig easier. I also have a checklist of every effect in my set, and a list of "need to gets." When I leave a gig and pack up my stuff in this way, it becomes apparent, very quickly, what props and replaceables are running low/need repairing etc. and I can take care of it the next day (instead of an hour before my next gig- yikes!) I work from my pockets and put the case down somewhere at the venue- but I am always looking to hear about other solutions- we have discussed the briefcase, the aluminum case, the doctor's bag, the assassin's pouch/fannypack/giberciere, the tacklebox/makeup kit/malloy case, and the holster- does anyone else have anything that they love that works great that I may not be considering? I'm about to buy a new leather briefcase if not, but was looking around - weighing the pros and cons. THANKS! |

After load my stuff on my jacket and pockets I carry them in this:
http://www.malloymodernmagic.com/close-up_case.htm The bad new is that I found it in a make up store...is EXACTLY the same, even mine is black that looks better to my taste...and costo only $25. People never seen this, I use it only to carry my things. My best, Hansel!

I can't carry all my props in my pockets. I bring a wide variety of props. I also carry a nail file, bandaids, asprin. You never know.. For my strolling I would say go to K-Mart and go to the camera area and look at the bags there. You should be able to find something. I would carry extra props(thumb tips, Decks of cards, coins, markers, rubberbands ) This way if you loose something or something breaks you are prepared and can continue to perform. For my one man close up show I work out of an Anvil Brief case. Its bullet proof and it goes with my look. If you really want to splurge check out Halerburton cases they are very nice.

Here is what I use and recommend. It will hold cups decks you name it. I use them for walk around and for storage at home. It will hold three columns of decks on their sides tightly. It really is perfect for magicians.

We have a Harbor Freight here in Tucson, AZ.
I think I own every case they sell. And I've got them on sale too.

I don't bring a case to the tables, but I do have a case off to the side, to replenish supplies from and to keep extra props in - a catalog case.

Since I do table side magic the perfect case for me is a silverware case or an artists case attached to Scott Guinn's Table Hoppers Friend (THF).
It attaches itself to the table you are working at so it gives you an area off their table to work on. It only uses about an inch of the customers table space so it's not intrusive. If I don't want to bring it to a certain table for whatever reason, I attach it to an unused table or set it down out of sight. Below is a photo of what mine looks like. As you can see I have it attached to a glass round table. I absolutely love this thing. Click here to view attached image.
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.
