Hello everyone. There's so much fuss about this book which has just been reprinted. I'm unaware of Nelson's stuff. I only do Sleeve Aces which is great by the way. Can someone who has the first edition comment on the stuff in this book? Thanks,

The stuff in the book is brilliant, and groundbreaking when it was first published. Copies were snatched up, and quickly vanished (I know mine did, whoever has it, would you bring it back?) And so, legends were born.
The ring and rope may seem standard to you if you have any experience with it, since all the popular routines use these moves. The Card material is extremely well constructed, and contains two classic sandwich efects (one containing the Frank Simon handling of the "Convincing Control" that has also become sandard) The Earl Nelson handling of "reset", which has also become the prefered handling among the experts, a wonderful top change that nobody does (but me, and I fool everyone with it) And the provebial "more". The coin material features some beautiful productions of coins from cards, and a coins across that baffled and inspired many fine magicians, including our Mr. Chosse (see the thread on Bobo's best in my guest section) and apparently, Michael Close. There is a card and coin effect that is wonderfully practical for the walkaround performer, and a color change of a card that occurs while there is a large coin sitting on the face of the deck, and the fingers are spread well apart. There is quite a lot more. I think one testiment to the quality of this material is that my copy was stolen over 15 years ago, and I still recall as much as I have. BTW, I hope they preserve the layout and artwork. All of that was innovative and strikingly appealing, especially given the state of magic book publishing at the time. Don't buy this book, buy two, because someone, someday, will borrow your first one and never return it.

The add for it mentions "Miller's variable placement" Can anyone tell me what that is ? I've never heard of it.

Miller's variable placement is a rather bold card move where you pretend to put a card in the center of the deck but it really goes onto the top. However, I can't remember that this move is discussed by Nelson in Variations.

Darn Curtis, you've inspired me. I have the original which I bought when it first came out and I haven't opened it in eons. I'm gonna crack that bad boy open and rediscover.

Actaully, it is a angle proof control of a card to the top, second from the top or bottom of the deck. Hence the "variable" of the title. To see Mr. Nelson do it is fun in the extreme. If you ever talk to him, ask him to describe what happened when he did it to Bruce Cervon.
If you ever get to a point where words have no meaning, you're probably talking to a dog.

Thanks everyone for the response. I made up my mind and got Variations today. Looks cool and reads well. I'll get back to you with more feedback when I plunge into it deeper.
