Dennis (or anyone I guess -- I am thinking of starting doing memdeck work. Do you recommend the Aronson stack over Tamariz's stack because of the effects others have "added" to it? or is choosing a stack not that simple? I assume they both have a similar range of effects they can accomplish, no?
(Sorry for such a newbie question--search is still down.) |

Ashley: See this thread, especially the last two posts (one containing a link to a must-read essay, and another by Dennis offering related comments): http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&start=0
Ellusionst discussing the Arcane Playing cards: "Michaelangelo took four years to create the Sistine Chapel masterpiece... these took five."
Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes: "You know Einstein got bad grades as a kid? Well, mine are even worse!" |

Cain: Thanks. However, Dennis doesn't say in that post about which one -- Aronson or Tamariz -- he would say is best (assuming "best" is actually a meaningful term in this situation). The essay, though, is new to me, and I'll start reading right away!
Thanks again! |

Hi Ashley,
Well, it's hard to pick one as "best" because that's a subjective judgement. So, as you suggest, its probably not possible to say that one is better than the other. There is a lot of material for both. But, much of the material for the Aronson Stack has been developed by Simon and is contained in his books. I can't be objective but I like reading Simon's explanations better than Mnemonica. We just speak the "same language" when it comes to cards and I grasp what Simon is saying easier and quicker. Still, there is much GREAT magic in Mnemonica and Juan Tamariz is a great performer and creator of card magic. You will not go wrong either way, but I recommend the Aronson Stack and all of Simon's books. There are a few more effects on Simon's Site, on mine, on Nick Pudar's and in the works of Mike Close. And that's just the beginning. You'll find more good memdeck material in the work of Darwin Ortiz, Larry Davidson, Bill Malone, Allan Ackerman, Dave Solomon, and that's just the beginning. Most of these guys are contemporary, but you can go back and look at earlier magicians like Bert Allerton, Laurie Ireland, Nikola, and the list just goes on and on. In the time it takes to just read this thread through you can be off to a good start and have the first five or ten cards memorized. So jump in. There's lots of us here on the Café ready to help. Dennis,
I agree with you that it can create some confusion and I'm not sure I will try to remember my old deck. I'll probably go with the Aronson stack and when I have that down maybe I'll try to pick up the old deck. There is a lot of effects you can do independant of which stack you're using. For example I could spread both decks face up and let the spec choose which deck I should use just to "prove" it can be done with any deck. Joakim |

Thanks again Dennis--looking through the threads on the Café (I'm new here), you seem so knowledgable and provide so much information on this and other topics. What a great guy you are! Loomismagic.com will surely be seeing some of my dollars next month.

Ashley,
What nice things to say. Thanks so much. If I have some knowledge, it's just because I've been doing magic for a long time. (It's been my career since 1970.) Your appreciation is more important than the bucks, but I appreciate the plug very much. Dennis Loomis

Dennis, Here's a thought about the above quote. You could use to decks in Aronson stack order. Put a b******r c***p at stack number 52 in one of the decks. Cut that deck in half. The other deck is in normalt AS order. Spread both decks face up. Now they will not appear in any similar order. If the choose the deck w/the c***p just cut at the c***p at it will be in AS order. Another tip that was given to me is this. Have the decks in AS order. Separate one deck into odd and even stack numbers. spread both decks face up. Both will appear in no particular order. If they choose the deck that is separated in odd and even stack numbers do a Faro shuffle and it will be back in AS order.
Magic is a vanishing art.

Edh, you just convinced me. I will drop my old and learn Aronson's. (when I get over the disappointment of doing all that work for nothing!)
Cheers, Joakim |

To Joakim,
Congratulations, you've made a good choice. Don't feel too bad about the time you spent. It got you started. It's like learning a particular software. I used to work with Word Perfect. It was a good program in it's day. But today, Word is the standard and I switched to it some time ago. Hard to learn over a lot of things... but it's worth it. I have a section on my website (see below) on memorized deck magic. Over twenty articles I've written on the subject. Much of it uses the Aronson stack, although there are many things relative to any memdeck. Feel free to visit and browse. It's free. Dennis Loomis
