Hi,
Im looking at getting involved in the state arts association and even trying to get some projects hooked up to grants. Anyone have experience on how and how not to proceed in these waters? I have some previous non profit and grant experience but not for my own projects.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Ed,
When I began in magic back in the late 1970's, I received New York State Council on the Arts grants for four consecutive years for various magic projects. I also managed to get written into several other arts organization's grant proposals to perform as part of their projects, so it can be done. I wrote about my experiences in a special report on how to get a grant for performing magic that is now part of my Success in Magic course. The process is a little more involved than I can get into in any detail here, but you should definitely look into getting involved in your state arts associations for a number of reasons. They often offer business workshops for artists that can be very helpful to you as you build your business. Furthermore, you can network with people who will hire you for their special events or who may be willing to write you into their grant applications as part of a performing artist series seeking funding. Finally, arts associations often offer low cost group health insurance plans for their members, and it is a lot less expensive that joining the chamber of commerce. I am in the process of revising and updating the Success in Magic course and will make the report on getting grants available separately in a few weeks. I was just going through some old files a few nights ago and I came across all my original grant applications and it was fun reliving those early projects. Jim |
