I am not sure if this is the right forum, but I could find no other.
I am going to start shipping small printed books to the US (from the UK), can anyone who has done this give me any advice on the cheapest, most effective and more importantly, the quickest manner of doing this?

I can only relate experience going the other way, from the US to the UK, but I think you'll find that the right answer for you depends in large part on your sales volume. There are shipping options here that are out of my reach, for my DVDs, because my sales volume does not justify regular pickups by a commercial carrioer, or volume discounts. But, for me, postage is not very bad, and I just have to accept that as a "cost of doing business."

Even without any added-cost expedients, the mails between your shores and mine seem efficient and quick - for me, a 4-ounce DVD costs $3.60 US to ship to anywhere in Great Britain, same price for Australia/New Zealand (I am always surprised by the number of orders from 'down under.') Delivery time seems to be 3-7 days. Customers seem to find the shipping rate and delivery time acceptable.

Watch your unit weight - if I could cut an ounce out of each unit (to 3 oz) I could save almost $1.

Thanks for the advice Ross - really appreciate it. I do (oddly) have experience of shipping from the US - but your post was still very helpful - still would like to here from some UK dealers as to what service they use.....

If you are doing large volume, have your product printed in the US and have your distributor mail them out...
This will cut the shipping time. Also the US post has a service called media mail or postal post it takes a few days longer, but it cuts the price by 80% sometimes.... Maybe UK has something similar

Called the royal mail. Close, it takes weeks to get there (when they aren't on strike) and it 80% more expensive then anywhere else.

Everything is more expensive in England(a lot of it has to be shipped in) Have you considered doing an ebook?
Perhaps you could mail a large volume of the books to a dealer in the US. As you sell them they chip them via USPS parcel post or media mail. Also you would get
the added benefits of more sales and a good relationship. Try Stevens, Denny and Lee, Hocus Pocus, or Hank Lee. You would have to be sure that you keep track of how many are sold by the dealer and how many you sell, but this could be an option.

Print on demand is available through many venues. You won't get as much money, but you don't need to do anything but promote your book.
