I agree with Spellbinder. A "Silk" would most deifinitely be an insiders term. I have referred to them as silk hand-kerchiefs or silk scarfs during shows as the audience would most definitely not identify the object as a silk. One could elaborate for the audience and tell them that magicians use only the finest woven silk material from the Orient due to their magical properties.
Silk is more of the adjective: denominal adjectives denoting what something is made of (e.g., woolen, metallic, wooden). Silk as a noun? Would need to be defined, so therefore "a silk" is an insider term. As the previous post asked "silk what?". You can define it once in an act then call it "the silk" from that point on. As far as a change bag. I call it "a very suspicious looking bag", or something I borrowed from my Church.

Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.

I had a funny experience. I was performing at a daycare and I came to my finale where I pull the silks out of my production box. Well, I know the old advice to call them something other than "silks" so I refer to them as "scarves."
Well, there was one little boy who kept on saying, as I pulled each silk out of the box, "Those aren't scarves! Those aren't scarves! THOSE AREN'T SCARVES!" Finally, when I got to some that actually WERE scarves, he quieted down. What gave a small boy such definite ideas about what IS and is NOT a "scarf" I have no idea!!! Just goes to show, sometimes you just can't win!!! |

I've had the same thing happen. To some children, a scarf is what goes with mittens for winter wear.
