You will just be reducing its value everytime you perform with it. And certainly don't buy high grade coins (XF, AU, UNC, MS) because they are shinier. You can still polish the low grade coins up nice and shiny if you like. Since what you really need is a well-worn coin, go with the lowest grade you can find. It will suit your purpose better and won't make coin collector's cringe when they see you "defiling" a collectible coin. One more word of advice... make sure you are looking for common dates/mint marks. Even in low grades, some dates/mint marks are rare and will come with a high price tag. Most coin dealers will have plenty of low grade coins floating around loose in a box. Unless you are really adamant that you want Morgans, Peace dollars can often be purchased for considerably less.

I've long wondered why it matters whether a routine like 3 Fly uses gimmicks, extra coins, magnets or anything else to ahceive the effect. I think a lot of it is to fool magicians into thinking it's closer to actual magic. Admittedly, if you only ever work in a t-shirt then a version utilising sleeves will not be of any use. What difference will it make to the audience if it uses a shell? Or a magnet? Whichever method you choose there will be something you need to hide. If it's not using a gimmick then it's going to be using some sort of sleight of hand to some degree. Even using gimmicks means sleight of hand needs to be used to hide the gimmick.
Also, why does the routine need to be done with coins. I use poker chips which are smooth, silent and easily visisble due to their colour.

Generally speaking, you are going to be using false transfers, switches, etc. (especially if one of the coins is an "extra" coin). In which case, they need to be close enough to the same color to pass for each other. If you are just buying the cheapest coins you can find, darker coins are probably just dirty or tarnished and can be restored to a shiny condition with silver polish, etc. But the "toning" (as coin collector's refer to it) on some coins, especially rainbow colored toning may not be removable.

I can recall a magician in the mid 80s that did a 3 fly routine with dices, looked impossible.

Actually if someone is looking for just the visual aspect of the routine then I find it strange that Lance Delongs version isn't mentioned anywhere really? Its complete routine, 3 coins are produced, they fly from hand to hand (without hands going near each other) and they vanish in the end. Its also the easiest version out there really. But on the otherhand, its quite gaffed but you could pretty much do it naked.
Still, if you do complete routine with it I am not so sure do the coins really even need to be examined. Keep in mind that laymen aren't aware of tricky coins and even if they were, coins aren't really doing anything that looks like its gimmicked. I used to do kohler version for some time before my coins were stolen along with my briefcase with some other props few years back and even with that routine, I found out that people really didn't care about examining the coins.
