Thinking about joining the Air Force as an RN, just have a few questions about duty stations and such. I'm prior service so I know a bit about the game, but the Air Force is 180 degrees from the Navy.

What happen? Why not go Navy as a zero and you get on a hospital ship and still be haze gray and under way. Did'ja get married or something and now wanna stay ashore?
That Skip something or other fellow is retired Air Force (also retired police and few other things, I can't quite figure him out), Jason England is in the Air Force. You go into the Air Force you'll end up in Greenland or Texas, maybe Wichita....gimme the open sea! |

Talked to the Navy and they ticked me off, they were treating me like I didn't know what I was talking about (after 12 years active I kind of know how the canoe club works) and were giving me the run around. They were more interested in getting in kids with a subpar ASVAB than a NAVVET. The Air Force were upfront and offered me some guarantees...in writing! The wife and I were talking about getting back into the military, we miss the travel and the people. If the Navy wises up and treats me in a semi-respectable manner I'd rather stick with them, but I didn't appreciate being talked to like a punk.

My detailer died on me the day we were suppose to meet, the low life.... They have to have a Navy recruiter for officers in the medical field. I'd hate to see you lower your standards for the Air Force....icky. I mean when they were told in the Air Force about don't Ask don't Tell they responded "Fabulous! Now you tell us there wath a polithy!". (smiley face). Good luck getting the Navy to go along, and they are not taking people with low ASVAB! Do they still have the ASVAB or something else?

Isn't that ironic. A Seaman making don't ask don't tell policy jokes about the Mighty Mighty Air Force. And every serviceman knows that joke is about the Navy

I was a Petty Officer not a seaman. See that? He was in the service, I was in the military. Hey Kid, you ever hear the old story, supposedly true, about an Air Force pilot who was in trouble over the ocean and they told him he could land on a carrier in the area. He took one pass and said he'd risk getting back to base cuz he couldn't pull it off..... To be honest I was never around Air Force personel, cuz I was in trouble spots and they were in Arizona.

Retired USAF, here, Kid. Don't let those canoe jockeys mislead you on the Air Corps. I lived in the SrNCO dorms with a two-room suite, cable TV, central AC, wall-to-wall carpet and full maid service. Military? Puh-leesse!! If yer gonna serve your country, do it in comfort and style! Twenty-two years - and I never hot-bunked once!!

Oh yeah tough guy? While you were living in your little room with cable TV, AC and your so called carpet I was snuggled up to some hot lil' honey with a beer in my other hand after a night of shooting pool preparing for a night of sin. That's right pal, while you were checking ID's and thinking "gee, I don't have to hot bunk (pulleaze, do you think all Navy guys are bubbleheads? On shore the berthing, we didn't do 'dorms', were as nice as what anyone else had), I'm so special, gee that guy is cute" I was walking around the streets of different cities every few days with a different lil' honey and a different brand of beer.
Maid service? MAID SERVICE?? You airdales can't take care of your own mess? They should have flown your mommies in to nurse ya! |

For all the Air Farce...um Force people out there. What bases were you stationed at that you like? I've got kids so I'm looking for family things first, schools, safety that kind of thing.
MagicSanta, joke for ya! An Airman and Squid were in the NCO head taking a leak. The Squid gets done and starts walking out. The Airman is shocked. "Hey Sailor, didn't they teach you to wash your hands after using the restroom?" The Squid replied, "Nope. They just taught us not to pee on our hands." Heard the story about that Airforce pilot. We were running behind the Roosevelt when I was on the FFG doing plane guard. They had a nugget get caught in the trap and went over the side. We heard them on the comms telling him to eject, but he waited until the plane was upside down and when he ejected he shot himself straight into the side of the carrier. Made a nice dent. They gave him the call sign Thud.

Hey Kid, Are you trying to stick around the Oklahoma area? I know Tinker AFB is there. Although if you are looking for a more family friendly situation you may not want that assignment. The whole base is Mob and you are guaranteed a few trips to the desert.
I don't know how lucky you will get with picking an assignment. My father tried for 26 years to get assigned to Macdill AFB in Florida. I think the closest we got was Louisiana. |

Trying to get out of OK at the moment, don't really have any preferences as long as the area is kid/family friendly. Been to Kirtland (New Mexico) and Kadena (Okinawa) and a couple of bases in the Florida panhandle. Was wondering about the New England area. Don't know what kind of hospitals/clinics the Air Force has RN's stationed at, so any info is appreciated.

Kid, I can only tell you about the bases I was stationed at back in the 90's. The primary bases in Germany (Ramstein, if it's still there, and Kaiserslautern) and Italy (Aviano) were great family locations. On-base schools, large hospitals, good communities, good family-centered programs. Aviano had no on-base housing, but the economy was safe, clean and affordable. Stateside included Malmstrom AFB, MT (Not recommended), Langley AFB, VA (Nice command headquarters base centered in a very large metropolitan area - lots going on - lots of traffic - typical big city issues - strong family support and activities - plenty of work opportunities for spouse - nice on base housing and elementary school - great hospital) and Seymour Johnson AFB, NC (Great onbase housing, off base schools, good family support, good hospital, huge operating budget). Problem with Langley and Seymour is their deployment status - You will be called - repeatedly.

Oh, I'm sorry, you were in in the 90's....I should be more sensative to your needs.
That is it, on Monday I'm getting Kid a gig in the Navy. Howzabout San Diego? Baltimore? DC? Jacksonville Florida? THE WORLD!!! Hey, is it true that you can go through Air Force "New Employee Introductory Training" on line rather than going to boot? Man, I went in the days they could still torture you and getting out of line would get you a fist to the snot box. |

Kid, I figured you already did this but here is the site for the nurse corp, they have a $25k bonus for signing up, you can get the wife a car and keep her happy.
http://www.navyjobs.com/healthcareopport......cialties I feel I must do what I can to keep you from down grading to the Air Force. |

Maybe we can narrow down to which uniforms you prefer, kid iowa! A relative is an Air Force dentist and he constantly brags the excellent working conditions and travels. Granted, relocation is part of every branch. He loves it but he's also a bachelor!

Thanks Skip, that's the kind of info I need!
Santa, I'm going to talk to a different officer recruiter, trying to stay away from Bethesda and San Diego. The only duty station that the wife definitely doesn't want is Great Lakes, she did 3 years there and doesn't want to go back. Uniforms are uniforms, doesn't really matter. I don't like the Navy whites, but rumor central has them changing to a more WWII vintage look. We'll see. The biggest deciding factor is who can get me the best shot at Nurse Anesthetist school.

Oh the Navy will get you anesthetist school. We had an engineering officer and he wanted to be a kid doctor, pediatrician or how ever it is spelled. The Nav said they would pay for him to go to medical school etc. and since he was still an officer he gets paid a salary, so he had, I think. How is that for a deal kiddies?
Hey evolve....most Air Force guys are bachalors, they can only get married in Massachuttets (sp). |

I'm hoping so, if they can put something in writing I'm back to haze grey and underway, unreps at 0300, and taking meclizine for the seasickness.
If the AirForce can offer it, then I'm FlyBoy McZoom. The Army doesn't fit into the picture.

No, cuz NURSE is five letters, one more than the Army allows on signs.
If you join the Air Force can you still sleep with your wife? |
