I am trying to locate a spinning effect that I saw a clown perform about 2 years ago at LeGrand David. I searched diligently for it when I first saw it and was unsuccessful. Now my mind is a bit cloudy as to its description, but from what I can remember it looked like this:

A stick of sorts with a multitude of colored “bangle” type bracelet like rings on it. The rings were about 3.5 inches in diameter made of metal, each a different metallic color. The performed walked through the audience with the device and the rings spun in, what I believe a globe shape. It was only this stick and the rings. (Maybe it was a large ring, hmmm) Any ideas what this was?

You're not talking about a Gyro Ring (aka Jitter Ring, Chatter Ring),
are you?

No, it is not that. The rings are much larger (The ones that spin) I think you are on the right track though.

The carport is a perfect place for chatter rings... Those things consistently make the top 5 list of "most annoying and loud props" to practice among a group of people. No to mention it is also one of the most "do nothing" props I've ever seen. No offense intended, just a few personal observations on the chatter ring.

I have a tub full of annoying props in my car port that I take to picnic type functions, which allows me to wrangle 20 to 50 wild children with out doing very much work, so you see my friend sometimes annoying props can be your best allies.

Al,

You nailed it ... you confirmed that the annoying props were indeed stored in your car port and that they are only used by non-jugglers in an outdoor setting. I suppose along with chatter rings you have bull whips for cracking and whistling diabolos for spinning, too !!

:O)

I would not use them for a long period of time. I watched the kids faces and saw the amazement. It would fit in my act when I do the I don't understand why this happens bit. The annoying pare would be about 30 seconds. The tough part is that I have to practice it!

In my tub-o-fun I have some stage balls of different sizes, juggling rings, ring frisbees, diabolo's, boomerangs, kendamas, spinning plates, chatter rings, yo yo's, those tubes that whistle when you spin them over your head, cheap juggling clubs, and other stuff that a 6 year old boy would love to get his hands on. With this tub-o-fun I can sit down for hours and help the little monsters learn to play with these uncommon toys.

I Googled Gyro, Chatter, Zinger, and Jitter Rings. Other that some type of sex toy, the rest are the smaller washers. I was looking for the larger loops like a bangle bracelet. Maybe I need to try and make one up? I don't know if it would even work.

Maybe try getting in touch with Le Grand David. They might be willing to help you out...from what I know it is a very tight knit family of performers.

I tried that evening - hard to break the ice. I wanted to say hi to all - they are legend. The theatre is beautiful. I might have to keep trying.

I hear ya Al...
I too have a number tubs full of all kinds of toys/props that fit into the "most annoying prop" catagory (no chatter rings though). However, they typically stay in my basement/playroom are never a big part of what I do as a professional entertainer. And while I can respect your ability to wrangle kids "without doing much work". I can speak with confidence when I say, "The chatter ring will never be my best ally". But hey, everyone developes their own techniques for engaging and entertaining large groups of kids (if that's what one does) and I am sure that your technique works great for you. For me, I can't imagine a handing a bunch of "annoying props" out to 20 - 50 kids and then having to stay around and listen to it. Yikes! Talk about a headache.
BTW... those corregated tubes that you swing and they whistle... I've always heard them referred to as "Bloogles". That may be a brand name though. By changing the speed of the swing you can get between 5 or 6 different notes on one of those. I used to be able to play Amazing Grace on the Bloogle... then my bloogles all snapped in two from wear and I haven't replaced them. Gotta find a source for those... It's a fun prop. But a large group of kids swinging them around would be a bit annoying...not to mention dangerous.
Respectfully

Cap'n,
You nailed 2 of the 5. In addition to Chatter Rings... there is Bullwhips, whistling Diabolos, and shaker cups. Which we use in our act, so we personally know how annoying they are. I forget what the 5th one was. Remember, I said that these were the most annoying props to practice among a group of people. I forgot to mention... indoors. That is part of the criteria, as well. All of these props are not near as annoying if practiced alone and/or outdoors. But put them indoors around a bunch of other people and it's a different story all together. I think most of you juggler types know what I mean.

AL,
You just described the contents of a few of my tubs, as well (except the chatter rings, of course). Funny how we all end up collecting a lot of the same cool/fun/unique/unusual/manipulative type toys. My two daughters, 2 and 8, consider it a huge treat when Daddy lets them come down into his playroom/office/studio and they get rifle through my boxes of cool toys from around the world. They will do this for as long as I let them. Heck, that's half the reason I collect all this stuff. The other half is, of course, because I am nothing but a big kid myself (and it's all a tax write off)
Sincerely,
AL

Love the Kendama. I picked that up during the 6 months that I was living/performing in Japan. I was way into it for a while, but lately I do not spend as much time on it as I used to.
Yeah, I bet your grandkids do love to play with all of your cool stuff. Must be fun for them to have a GrandPappy who collects and enjoys playing with such cool toys.
That, I believe is one of the keys to happiness and longevity... staying young at heart and never losing your sense of fun/joy/playfulness/imagination. Playing with toys, or juggling for a living helps us all to do that.

I have told this story before, but it bears repeating. My wife and I went to the Burlington Vermont juggling convention and she started talking to Art Jennings, well they chatted and wispered to each other for about two days, and she told me that old Art was much younger at heart than his years. I later spent a little time alone with Art and he showed me a picture of his girl friend. That old buzzard was dating a woman several years younger than my wife. Art is no longer with us, but when I get to be 80 I want to date a 40 year old women too.

The true "fountain of youth". Playing with toys for a living helps, but the true secret is having a woman half your age... Way to go ART... RIP
