I have an offer to work 2 weeks (2 7-day cruises)on a US based cruise ship. They will give me the best available passenger cabin (Not crew), $500 cash, $500 ship credit for 3 45-minute lectures. Two of my lectures are magic based - (Cons and Frauds). Is this typical? Seems like fun since a free cruise for me is worth it. I have to abide by a lot of behavior rules - socializing, drinking, partying, etc. Nothing I can't handle. This is a guest lecturer gig.

2 weeks for $500 cash??? And, what can you buy with "ship credit"? Sounds to me like they are just trying to get you for cheap. I don't do ships but I know guys who do and they average about $2500 a week.

Wow I really think they are just trying to get you at a cheap price, keep in mind if you do this then they will expect it in the future from other entertainers.

Yes, that is what I was worrying about. I really don't have any obligations but to do 3 lectures and relax. Maybe

Just think of all the potential real paying work that you might loose by taking this.

Many years ago when kid's birthday parties went for $75, I was undercutting the competition by $20. I soon realized that I was not helping anybody - including myself. Any cruise ship workers out there for some insight? I'd like to counter with something appropriate and in range. Do cruise ship performers "live" in crew quarters? I've been down there before and they are sure not to my liking.

For a Lecturer that’s not a bad deal, as far as ships go. For an entertainer it’s not a good deal.
Most lecturer I have worked with get the cruise for free for them and one other person and that’s it. |

I agree with T.C., you've got a decent deal.

For lectures it seems to be a reasonable deal.
I have a good friend who has a top selling book in his category (non-magic). They offer him less, but the cruise is for 3-4 days. Also, keep in mind you are receiving a vacation at no cost to you. I go on vacation about 4 -6 times a years at a rough cost of $3,500 -$6,500 each major trip. So I would consider a deal of such if it was for a lecture and if it was during my vacation time Let us know what you decided!!!

I see that you all can understand my dilemma - I don't want to diminish my value, but I am coming onto the ship as a lecturer more than a magician. (Even though I use some magic in two of my presentations) So far it looks like I am doing well in the "guest lecturer" realm - a bit more than most. At least I am getting some money. In the contract, I cannot gamble or drink excessively, so I imagine a lot of lattes and overpriced duty free items. I don't know if I can use the shipboard credit for a tour, but I have been everywhere in the Caribbean - so not much of a gain there. I'll continue to listen to advice until Wednesday when I have to give an answer. I'll post my decision at that time.

Chris,
I would go for it. Look at it this way, if you do a great job they'll be more likely to invite you back at which point you can charge more and have a happy client. You've been given a chance that none of us have I would say take advantage of it. Even though the pay isn't great, it's better than nothing. Some good might come out of it. Take the time to read a few books, eat at the buffets, sit in the sun and network with the staff. Josh London |

I'm leaning very heavy toward the free cruise...

Also, remember that the Cruise Director’s word can go a long way with the folks in the office who book the entertainment.
Once on board let the CD know that you are a performer, you could do a ten or fifteen minute turn on stage and if the CD likes it, you could be back working as an Entertainer making the medium dollars like the rest of us. |

GO!!! I love cruises... the free vacation is worth it alone. I wouldn't look at it as "I'm getting paid $500" but as "I'm getting paid a two week vacation and $500"...
Go!

Tell them you want to bring along your wife, girlfriend, lover, significant other, etc. at no charge, and then go for it.

Check if you can sell product! Get it in writing if you can.
Some lines let the lecturers do so, some don't. You could do very nicely from this. Different items after each lecture. Timothy |

You guys are great! I have a bunch of magician items that I will only sell to a magician, but I have some general books and items that go with my lectures. I'll check on the wife thing (Or see if they will let me bring the girlfriend) Ha!
I appreciate the advice and would appreciate any additional thoughts and suggestions. I still have one full day left.

Okay - I signed the contract. My wife and I leave in February for 2 weeks. I can sell product if I keep it under $50 and the ship gets 10% if charged to ship board account. Will report when this is over!
Thanks for the help - I was able to use advice for adding on the wife and selling my stuff!
