I just have to share with you guys this wonderful set of monkey fist balls. I got 2 sets from Josh Riel. They are available in Frank Starsini's site.
I have the ruby and gold set. They are just the right size for my set. 3/4" to be exact. I use a Johnson Brass set plus a chop cup extra and they are just perfect for the Mendoza Method users. I want to thank and congratulate Josh for sharing his creations to the community. Its not everyday that we CB lovers get to handle monkey fist balls. It has always been the crocheted balls we got accustomed to .... well at least for me. I love it! Rannie

And all the while I thought Josh was only good for a laugh!
What's with the monkey's having fists? Are they upset about something? Should we be worried? Prepared? Cautious? Gather bananas? What? |

Rannie have had 2 sets for a week now- I concur excellent workmanship=the chopped ball works beautifully with my Riser Chop.

I appreciate it Rannie. Thank you as well Leaycraft.
Jerrine, "monkey fist" is a traditional Yakima dish. We serve it under cups.

Some times served as a side too moose knuckle!
Josh, you get your matching final loads worked out yet? I do love these MFB's! |

I haven't come close to a reasonable sized final load ball.
8 wraps is fine, 10 is more difficult, 12 relies heavily on fate, 2" or larger takes faith and a reliance on a higher power, one that can tie a knot. However if you use those mini cups, a 1.25" ball makes a fine final load. So don't change the ball, change the cup. However a pea sized MF working ball is going to be tough too. I think it's just going to take some time.

Josh, could you use a thicker string and a bigger core? You could keep the ball to 8 wraps or less...

Definitely. Leather tends to be stiffer and thicker, and for me much easier to do a large ball. A 2" ball is 9 wraps or so with leather, but the material I use is half the width than typical leather lace and much limper. It is certainly easier with a thicker cord.
But the material I use has the qualities that matter more to me. I don't want to give the impression that what I use is the best, just what I like. Leather makes a very nice ball! It's a matter of taste.

Josh, today is THE day! Today I will be performing for the Kythe Foundation at the Children's Hospital here in Manila....for kids who are terminally ill. Did you ever think during one of those long nights when you were creating those monkey fist balls that they will be tools in giving joy to those who need it most? You are my accomplice today in putting smiles on those special kids' faces. Now THAT is REAL MAGIC!
Wish me luck! The show begins in 30 mins... Catch ya later! Oh yeah...a BIG THANKS from your friend...and from our little friends in advance! Rannie
