For those of your familiar with Bobo's many routines for Copper/Silver transpo, I have a performance question. There are 4 distinct CS transpo routines listed in Bobo, in the same area as Presto Chango. Routine Number One has the coins in the spectator's hands. While facing spectator, gaffed coin is in specs right fist, and the original half in his left fist. In the routine, I take the half from his fist and while chatting about taking the half for myself, I do a Bobo switch and toss the the palmed Copper into my hand. The book calls for tossing 2-3 times before executing the switch.
This seems so unnatural to me. The Bobo switch is easy, but there just doesn't seem to be a reason for someone to toss a coin repeatedly 2-3 times before being done. A normal person would take the coin, toss, and be done. Just curious how you guys approach this routine/move. Is it enough to just pick up the coin and do the Bobo switch on the first toss? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. |

The first reference to a "Bobo Switch" appeared in Professor Hoffman's 1890 book More Magic. The original method of changing the coin was a placement and not a toss. The two tossing feints, followed by the third toss, first appeared in an entry by Ellis Stanyon in a 1899 issue of Mahatma. Since Bobo wasn't born until 1910, you can see that this was in use, in various ways, way before Bobo "reinvented" it.
A lot of magicians don't like the feints, or even the tossing for that matter, and perform the sleight as they see fit. Anyway you choose to do it, as long as the proper timing and misdirection is utilized, will be undetected. Just fit it to your style. |

Like Chad suggested, do what feel natural to YOU.
I don't do three tosses and besides the Bobo switch I'll sometimes use a one hand change or 'Spellbound' moves. I don't thing three feints are necessary but if it can add to your presentation then go for it. "Hopefully the third toss will work (nervous laugh)." |

I'm not familiar with the spellbound move, Jaz. Can you "spell" this out for me?

You may want to take a look at the "Crimp Change" by our own Marion Boykin here at the Café Corbett. It makes for an excellent "visual" copper/silver transposition.....
Where I go, so do my coins.....

The "Spellbound" can be found in several sources. David Roth's Expert Coin Magic...Made Easy! series is a good source for the beginner. It's also on the Bobo's DVD as extra material.
For the "Crimp Change", depending on you ask, you can find it at http://www.vinnymarini.com or look up the "de Manche Change", which is the original. |

You can easily do sol stones one handed switch as a toss without all the faints into the other hand, instead of the bobo switch. the bobo switch is good and can be natural if done in proper context. you should be talking and the tossing should be the bt product of you fumbling around with and tossing the coin around while you speak.

The first "Spellbound" I learned was in the 'Stars of Magic' book.
Another good source is Richard Kaufman's 'CoinMagic' book. |

Jaz,
Very true. But everybody has to admit that David Roth's series on Expert Coin Magic made easy,1,2 and 3 or the compilation DVD and his Ultimate Coin Magic series, is, in my opinion, the cat's ***. There is nothing better in coin magic, to explain the different terms, sleights and nuances than this series of DVD's. What a gold mine everybody has at their fingertips, so to speak. It's all there. Jim. |

Or look at page 12, I think, in Bobo's for "The One Hand Switch" since you are working from that book anyway

Corbett, I like the Copper/Silver Transpositions in Bobo's, learned a lot from the nuances in each routine over the years. As for the Bobo Switch, yes it's taught to toss it a few times but like it's been said, do what's comfortable. The problem with doing a single toss is that the spec doesn't get the opportunity to feel for sure that indeed you tossed in the actual coin. It's not that big a deal really in the greater flow of things but it is something to think about if you like thinking about such things. As for the actual Transposition effects, they are nice but, well I think I came up with something different, perhaps even better...
As mentioned, I came up with a Cop/Silv Transposition using my Crimp Change, called the "MB Transpo." It does provide for an actual visual change that I believe is not explored in Bobo's as to these effects. To me (and many) it is a more amazing transposition that doesn't use any extra coins, gaffed coins, tossing, etc. Also, it is not done down on a table (and no real need to do it in a spec's hands) but up with coins held at about shoulder height and outward toward the specs. The coin changes right before them, and not just the coin at the fingertips but the coin in the closed hand changes too. They "see" the coin at the fingertips miraculously change, then to seal the deal you pull the other changed coin right out of the closed hand, right in front of them. IMHO, it is a perfect transposition with the magic happening out where they can "see" it happen. It is an engaging effect and done upclose where specs can't be fooled... It is one of the "4 Amazing Effects" I include with my NEW "Crimp Change Routine." It's a great effect, can be done anywhere at anytime with regular coins, and absolutely guarantees to amaze...Just ask around here... -Mb
