I'm considering putting something like this together. Am I re-inventing the wheel here? Is there already a convention/festival here on the west coast?

You're dreaming Mark. I can think of 32 reasons why you can't go. Your house, your wife, and 30 first graders.

OK, there is interest. good.

Let me think about it for a few days and I'll get back to this post.

Right now, what I am thinking is something small like: Renting a hotel suite with a kitchenette for a few days near a good pitch. That way we could all work and watch each other perform, and have a home base to have some meals, lectures, and maybe some crash space.

Those of more affluence could get their own rooms at the hotel if they wish.

Not sure where to do this would be the best, but it'd have to be somewhere relatively receptive to lots of street performing. I'm in SF, but LA is good- and so is San Diego if we shmooze the parks administration people.

True enough, but San Diego has some great sunshine to offer! Another fun option might be Las Vegas...

Forget Las Vegas. The Casinos own all the good spots, and they seem to think they own the sidewalks as well. Anything we do here would be considered "impeding the flow of business" into or out of their establishment, and right or wrong, we'll be asked to move on in no uncertain terms.

There are a few upscale places that seem ripe for busking, but good luck getting the site management to agree to anything.

If there was a choice, I'd prefer L.A. It's closer to me than the others, it has the Magic Castle for evening relaxation, and some buskers here already know the ins and outs of performing there.
