OK, time for one of Eric's fans to climb aboard.
I purchased Eric's first course as a "reward" to him for all the valuable information and support his e-mails gave me as I went from being a business professional to a magic professional(3 years now). My logic was if the material had only 25% content of the e-mails value, it was still a good deal. I was pleasantly surprised. If you are in business, or industry, the price of the programs of any of these info marketing folks (Jack, Dean, Jim, Chris, Brad et al.) is a fraction for any course, or program, you would attend, or purchase, in the "real" world. Why buy one of their programs?? My answer is "why try to reinvent the wheel?" If someone has been there, done that, why not take advantage of their expertise? One idea, one thought, could be worth thousands to you within your business. As I have indicated I have become a supporter of Eric, but I have recently heard/seen several other programs, I purchased Jack's bootcamp CDs. Excellent value, and there is one in there that is worth big $$$$ (no B.S.) because I am doing it! This year I will perform close to 250 shows, next year the goal is 300, not a big increase, but I hope to differentiate my market. I look at this entire situation from the point of someone with a SINCERE desire to make it work (NOTE the "MAKE IT WORK" not "WAIT TILL IT WORKS"). While doing my close to 40 shows this month, I have also done a mailing of over 1000 pieces in the past 10 days to pump my New Year. For those that are looking around, I have read Jim Snack's material and it will give you a good foundation in general marketing, and creating your business. You can then move on to one of the other specialists, who detail their approach to different markets, and the BUSINESS of MAGIC. As an indication of my backgound, and upon which I base my comments, I was in heavy industry as a professional purchasing manager/negotiator for over 25 years. I have 2 university dgrees (English, and another in marketing), I have been performing magic for over 30 years. I own THE "ShaZzam!" show with over 65 stage illusions. So I have a vested interest in MAKING my magic business work! If you really want a base way to determine whether to purchase a course, or program, try some of the tips that you are given freely (yes, I know they are an incentive to buy product)in the newsletters, and if one of those tips results in $$$$$, BUY the d--- course!!! It certainly will not hurt you!!! Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!" P.S. P.M. me if you would like any more input. - B.M.

I'm on Jack Turks' email list and I like it. There are some nuggets of wisdom on those emails. I've been on the list for quite some time...since Dave Dee was heading things. I think the point of the emails is is to keep you inspired and thinking about your magic career. Think of them as a little regular encouragement. And it's FREE, so why not?

RIGHT Tim!
BOTH (actually all of the guys) offer REAL value and insights and all for 100% FREE through their e-mails THAT YOU HAVE TO DELIBERATLY SIGHN UP FOR! Not sure what there is to complain about, but to each their own. Besides, anyone can freely opt-out any time they like, though I think that is a mistake… again, just he voice of experience. In life as in success… SW, SW, SW… N! (“Some Will, Some Won’t… so what! NEXT!”) As a success coach that has supported many thousands, we can’t MAKE people become successful if they INSIST that they are destined to fail on their own! Work with the ones that are willing to do what it takes! SURE they (Jack/Eric… etc) also make offers... it's called BUSINESS! No real business owner can constantly GIVE away the store with-out selling stuff too... I'm not sure what the big deal is, but that is just me. WHY would we begrudge anyone the chance for mutual success??? Hey, I have been helping people for nearly 25+ yeas succeed in this industry... (mostly for FREE!) and like with ANYTHING, I can only help those that WANT the help. Can’t PUSH a wet noodle up hill and still win the race… who’d want to anyway! Like I said: “SW, SW, SW…N!” That is complaining about FREE success support as well! – Heck it happens here too… no big deal, just saying. Thinking of YOU and our Success! I am at your service and in HIS Service, Deano (loves success, free or not) in Reno <><

I don't know who here has heard of Eric Anderson(co-wrote Ah-ha! with David Harkey, former street magician in Atlanta, now full time corporate and trade show magician) but he offers(offered) a course that I picked up at his lecture a while back. I am half way through it and it seems to be very good. He has talked about developing a USP so you can be "unique". He covers how to develop a back story/USP for different markets. He gets into the nitty gritty of marketing. He also included his FULL lecture dvd which includes lots of GOOD magic(stuff he really used on the streets and still uses in corporate work and trade shows). I wouldn't call any of it "easy" or "self working", but if you put the time in some real winners. He also included a full 2 hour interview with the man himself, Joel Bauer, which has excellent advice on everything, but mostly life and business in general. To top it off he includes a free phone consultation(cant remember the length of time or value because I don't have the course right her next to me but I believe it to be up in the hundreds of dollars if you just came to him out of nowhere). I paid $100 for everything! What I really liked is that he makes it easy to adapt his strategies to ANY market. From kid shows to trade shows, he gives you the dirt. I also appreciate that he didn't try to upsell any other products. He just has the one course, and it includes everything...
Since this thread started I have talked with two magicians who I know and trust. One is a part time pro the other full time. They said they both purchased Dave Dee's material a few years back and both were disappointed. One said he returned the product and the other said he sold it to another magician at a discounted price. I personally cant comment on his products as I don't and never have owned them, just forwarding what they told me. |

Eric's (Anderson) stuff is good to be sure and waaaaay too cheap for what you get as well. $100.00 is less that the cheapest performer should be charging for sure and if you do ONE THING in "ANY" of the courses outline you should easily make all your money back and have the tools to make more money for life!
Just like anything in life, it only works if YOU DO! That is just simple, basic success! Good stuff guys! Thinking of YOU and Your Success! Deano (doing what works) in Reno <><

O.K. time for me to chime in. Years, I mean years ago I purchased Dave Dee's initial offerings. Culled what I thought would work for me in my target markets and guess what---IT WORKED. So the value is in there and it worked for me. Continued luck with the biz to Jack Turk (who I don't know at all).
Kaplan's stuff. Same story as above. But, I also bought a Santa Via Satellite franchise as soon as it was available to lock me into my home market area (not my only market by far)and I have never used it. Yet. Now I am moving into niches which that show will rock in. Overall, Kaplan, in my experience and acutally using bits and pcs. of his stuff--excellent and will put $$$'s in your pocket. NOW. Eric Paul's Theater Booking System is the #@#$$@%^#@@(sorry for the language Eric). The very first theater I met with booked the show and I have more coming in... Don't have Eric's other goodies, yet, but this system rocks and if you don't see value and what his and the others' can do for you and your income then you are missing the boat BIG TIME. But, I also bought a Santa Via Satellite franchise as soon as it was available to lock me into my home market area (not my only market by far)and I have never used it. I picked up Kaplan's Santa-via-Satellite license for this Christmas, and did 12 shows (ranging from malls, to libraries, to corporate family Christmas parties). I finished my last SVS show for this season on Sunday night. It was a fantastic show, and I'm sad to see it done for this year. Looking forward to next year. I just followed John Kaplan's marketing suggestions, and it worked perfectly. Quote:

BTW, for those who are interested (and haven't heard yet), Jack Turk has just released the newly found recordings of Dave Dee's very first bootcamp from back in 1999. At only $77, you simply can't go wrong. I ordered them as soon as I got the email. You can get them here http://magicmarketingcenter.com/bootcampbox (I'm assuming it's ok to give this link here, since I'm not selling my own product, and I make no commission off any sales). Brian |

Thanks guys! I appreciate the comments and support. (John's cracks me up!)
I pray you will all have a wonderfully profitable New Year and if I can help, great. I'm here for you as I know Dean, Jack, Jim & others are too. My formula for what I do for magicians is pretty simple... 1) I do it in my own business to make a living and grow 2) I document what I'm doing as I go along (i.e.-tracking. Makes it so much easier next campaign to see what worked and what didn't) 3) I share it with those that are interested. Pretty simple stuff really. If you want to do the shows I'm doing, I'll show you how I got them. And that would be the biggest recommendation for any of this stuff mentioned. Find someone who is doing or recently did something you want to and get their advice. As far as frequency, that is always a touchy subject. I really like the article Don shared too. I recently went to a daily and it has done wonders for me. Not only in sales, but in everyone benefiting. My "core" group is showing incredible returns this year already and things are rocketing. So I personally think it's all about content. If you have something to share, share it. If not, wait until you do. I don't believe in what some internet marketers say about just "B.S.-ing" / offer & repeat. That's a waste of time for everyone. But if someone is sharing useable content, I'll accept 3-4 emails a day. It doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I recently sent out an email that documented exactly how I make well over 100 grand a year in just performance fees in my area. It was free. But you had to be subscribed to have read it. I take my list of friends very seriously and GIVE lots. That's what works for me. Happy New Year, EP

Hi Fast Eddie and others,
I can't give advice on which course to buy, but I'm happy to tell you what worked for me personally. First of all, let me say that one of the best marketing tools is 'time'. If you offer a good quality show (which you obviously do), then in time, word of mouth bookings will just about keep your book full. Having said that, here's what's been good for me.... Firstly, let's look at PreSchools and Day Care Centres. In my experience, I found I was booked A LOT more for PreSchools when I offered a 'story type' show. I also did standard magic shows, but the story type shows was what increased my PreSchool bookings incredibly. For example, it can be a simple as this - You have lost your magic wand and can't do your magic without it. Throughout the show you are looking for it, and in the end, the kids help you get it back some way - Happy Ending. Take a look at some of my PreSchool 'story shows' here - http://www.sirlaughalot.com.au/shows.htm You have mentioned you have a good sound system, and that is great. I'd also advise to get yourself a nice backdrop and add some music to the show, even if it's only music played while your helpers come on and off stage. For Preschools, I do a flyer for each of my shows. The flyers are A4 size. The front has a big pic from the show, the name of the show and a couple of testimonials. The back of the flyer has a few more pics and a brief description of the show, show requirements, etc. Along with my flyers, I include a cover letter which includes the price for the show(s) and also a special offer of some kind. For example, if you book before a certain date you get the Christmas show at a discount rate. Speaking of which, it's good to have holiday themed shows in your repertoire. I have a few Christmas shows, which can be done in July as well as December. You can write a show for major holidays in your country, Halloween for example. Each year, I offer PreSchools 2 different shows and a Christmas show. I change these shows each year and rotate them. Apart from PreSchools and DayCares, you may want to send your marketing to libraries. I don't do a ton of libraries, but the ones I do have me back several times each year without fail. Now to birthdays. I don't do story type shows for birthdays, a straight magic show is ideal. Initially I took a Yellow Pages ad, and this generated a lot of business for me, but over the years I dropped it because word of mouth replaced the need for it. When marketing birthdays (or anything), you really need to get your product in front of the people that will be buying it. Therefore, a parenting magazine is perfect. They deliver these things bi-monthly to all the places where parents are likely to frequent; Preschools, Daycares, Libraries, etc. Here in Oz, we have one in each of the major cities; in Sydney it's called 'Sydney's Child'. They're expensive to advertise in, but they work. The best marketing for birthdays, though, is done at the actual party. When I do a party, each of the kids leaves with a number of pieces of my marketing. My 'lolly bags' have a fun cartoon pic of me on them, and all my contact details too. In each bag is a colouring sheet which also has my contact details on it. Kids take these home and colour them in, and parents put them on the fridge, so it's a good piece of marketing which is not likely to be thrown away too quickly. I also have balloons with a little pic and my details printed on them. I use these as give-aways, and to make sure everyone gets one, they are also in my give-away lolly bags. The birthday child gets a card with a photo of both of us in it and my contact details on the back. People keep these a LONG time. Get some half A4 flyers done of your birthday show (with a pic and a brief FUN blurb), and when you work in PreSchools, ask if you can leave some of these on the front desk for the parents to take. Also, always have business cards handy, as parents are always asking for them. You mentioned PreSchools and Daycares and birthday parties. Some other places I regularly get work is shopping centres (quite a few of these book through agents, so find out who they are and send your stuff to them). Also, keep your eyes open for festivals and fairs in your area. There a 2 major annual festivals near my home, and they booked me every year. Just finally, it's good to have a nice corporate identity, so that all your stationary, flyers and business cards match. It looks professional and really does help with getting bookings. I hope all of that has been of help to you and anyone else who is looking for ways to increase bookings. Good luck, Billy James |

Thanks for all the information, Billy. As an update, I actually purchased both courses, and all the great information you gave is actually covered. I would have to say that both courses are good. Eric's is more generalized. I would suggest to anyone considering one over the other to go with Jack's because it is much more detailed. I'm sure my next course purchase will be Jim Snack's, but I do not think he has a sale until the end of the year. I have plenty of information to digest and ideas to implement from the above courses this year anyway.
Thanks again to all who added to this thread! Eddie |
