Hi there,
Recently I have started to learn unicycling, and having now spent my first hour or so trying to ride it, I thought it would be good to post a little video. Here is the link: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WOlDHvEr5js This video is not meant to be impressive or entertaining in the slightest, it is simply an unedited few minutes of my practice. The reason I am posting it is that I really want to know if I am doing anything wrong! If I am, then I want correcting at this early stage! If I'm not doing anything majorly wrong, then I will know to plow on and carry on the way I am! So, for those of you who are willing to sit through this 5 or 6 minute video and leave feedback for me, I thank you greatly in advance! All comments, suggestions and feedback are warmly received! Thanks, in advance, for any and all help you can give! Many thanks Mark Watson (mark1991) PS The background music is to stop you from falling asleep, although you can turn off the sound if you don't like it!

I am new to riding unicyle myself and am asking questions on forum myself. I can ride a unicyle idle and juggle. My advice is to ride away from hand supports with your arms out like your walking a tight rope. In my experience when you hold onto something you don't learn to balance. When I was learning to idle that really was true. Anton who post on site is a huge help. |

Mark,
I suggest 2 things for you right now ... First: Place the ball of your foot (almost to the toes) on the pedal rather than placing the pedal mid-foot. This will help your balance. Second: Once on the saddle and while still holding on to your support, just rock back and forth to get the feel of the wheel beneath you. Ultimately you will need to become just as comfortable with the wheel going backwards as forwards. Kind of like learning to 'walk before you can run' sort of thing. I learned on a public tennis court. It was three courts wide with a fence all around. I would ride one way then turnaround and ride the other. Eventually I would tun away from the fence and ride towards center court, fall and then do it again. This helped me alot. Of course there was no one playing at the time. Learning to 'free mount' came later. I practiced 30 mins to an hour everyday and saw some improvment by the end of a week but everyone is different. Hope this helps and I'm sure others will chime in, too (hint, hint: Anton, my brother, Al ... anyone?) Aloha-ha, Cap'n Mike ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I also want to thank Cap'n Mike he help me with the hopping unicycle so Mark I would listen to him. I pratice twice a day for about a half hour each as well I found any longer than half hour I was getting worse not better. It took me two weeks to ride about 10 feet then it just clicks and you can ride. Look at unicycle hopping post to see video clips of how amazing people become on uncycle.

I would say first get off the grass (that is grass isn't it?)
I second the ball of the foot on the pedal deal. Very important. Get all of your weight on the seat. I found it helpful to hug the seat a little with your inner leg. Pay atention to how strait up and down you sit as well. Sit as strait as possible. Bottom line, do it, do it, do it. You'll fall you'll get bruises from the seat hitting your leg and your likely to hate it for a while. I did. But after you learn to ride like 20 feet it all starts to come together. Idling however is a diffrent story. Anton sailor James |
