You went out and got yourself a Svengali deck, you learned the technique on how to use the deck, now how do you make it better?

Deck switch?
I believe there are ways to fan the deck also. I do believe the key is how are you going to reveal the selected card. |

1. Get Mark Lewis's "The Long And Short Of It". It contains some really killer ideas and the routine is fantastic.
2. Obtain a copy of "The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks" and you will find a whole chapter devoted to the Svengali Deck. 3. Research the existing literature starting with your personal library. You may be surprised at what you find. 4. The Svengali Deck - like any gaff deck - can be a powerful weapon if used properly and sparingly. Think outside of the box. Imagine how to apply it to existing effects. Try unique approaches and invent your own effect with it. Try to stay away from the basic handling of the Svengali. I recommended Mark Lewis's book precisely because that routine will fry anyone who has fiddled about with a Svengali Deck. There are techniques in the literature that teach you how to overhand shuffle the Svengali, how to use the deck's capabilities in a different manner by altering the set up. Simon Lovell has a killer routine with a Svengali Deck. I believe it is in either "Simon Says", or "Son of Simon Says". I have used it on both laypersons and magicians with equal success. I second the recommendation for Mark Lewis' "The Long & the Short of It." Although it is primarily devoted to explaining the Svengali Pitch, it contains information and tips on the handling of the deck that are not found in many other places.
The pamphlet is available direct from Mark and many other magic dealers, click HERE for more info. SETH

Come up with routines with it
I think what I like about magic/skills/tricks/trick decks/gimmicks is that there are infinite possibilities. Recently I just came up with a say stop/remember your card/put it back/shuffle routine and then I place the deck in 5 stacks. I have them remove two at a time, leaving one stack. I split that stack and tell them to pick a stack. That stack has their card on top of it. Looks completely random I think. Also, same kind of trick but the reveal will be "Ok I'm going to split this de..... hold on I'm getting a text message." I pull out my phone, look at it for a second and say "oh wait it's for you" and show them a picture message with their card and a msg saying "is this your card?" |

This is true, a Svengali Deck is not a "one-trick" trick, it is more of a utility item that lets you perform dozens of tricks based on the Svengali Principle. This lets you concentrate more on the way the chosen card is revealed (a card stab; a deliberate miss followed by an instant change to the correct card; counting down to the chosen card, using a TV Frame or a Card Duck, etc.) SETH
