So I'm having a postcard designed for me. I might sound like an idiot for asking this, but I really don't use postcards that often. On the back of my post card I am having a small section listing previous shows on the left. On the right will be a large open white area for me to write whatever it is I want to write. Where do you write the person address you are mailing this to? Anywhere on the back? Where do you place your return address? I just want to know the positions for these things so I don't have a 1000 postcards returned to my address because I wrote the wrong address in the wrong place. Thank you.

You write all the essential info (return address, sending address) in the normal area you'd write on an envelope. You place the stamp in the upper right hand corner too.
My postcards are full color on one side, on the other it's white. The names/address of the person I'm sending to is right in the middle. My return address is in the upper left hand corner and stamp in upper right hand corner. That still leaves a bunch of room for more copy. I add testimonials along the bottom and a few "big" clients along the left side and finish it off with an attention grabbing headline across the top. Josh London |

Actually, you can just design in a white space on the back of the card for the mailing and return address'. For instance, I recently designed an 8" X 5" full color post card with pictures and writing on both sides. However on the lower right hand corner of one side, I left a 2.75" X 5" white space. My return address was placed there, and then there was plenty of room for a mailing label.
All 1000 of these cards went through the mail without a problem.

Hi MagicJG:
I am a graphic designer and illustrator myself and do many designs for magicians like yourself every year. Perhaps I can help and offer some insite into this for you. It would be my pleasure to do so. - Postcards and the standard US Mail are pretty lenient when it comes to postcard address placement. If it is not using a barcode, you have great flexibility. It is when you start using bar codes for larger volumes or with coporate work, that you run into issues of placement for the scanners to be able to pick up and read them. Since you are just using an address and a stamp, the stamp usually goes on one side in the upper right corner. I usually try and allow a 1/4 inch clear zone around the stamp area. This is just to ensure the stamp gets placed right and that nothing intereferes with it or that the stamp does not mess with the design or elements of my message. As far as the address goes, I usually divide the back of the postcard (leaving it white) into 2 sections (split in half). The right side is where I can place additional information such as a "call to action" or information about my shows etc. The right hand side is where the stamp and address can go. I just center the address in this section and it works out just fine. - Keep in mind of the size of your postcard. There are regulations on postcard sizes and the size can change the cost of the postcard. I would check with your local post office and you can have them give you the standard sizes and prices for postcards you may want designed or mailed. By doing this ahead of time, you can save yourself a lot of money. - Another common pitfall is that many folks put too much postage on postcards then really needs to be there. Once again, call your post office and ask them the proper postage cost for your mailing. You may be able to save a lot of money. Hope these tips help you. Kyle

Why do you want to include a return address? Do you want them to drop you a line? Put your web address, email address, phone number, and IMHO where you have worked before is irrelevant, what you can do for them is moooooocho more important. If you leave the back blank and have a more spacific message printed on it by a local print shop for several hundred at a time to a target audience you will get more bang for your buck.

Return address is also for returned mail. If you have an invalid address, you certainly wouldn't want to keep wasting postage by sending future mailings to it.

Interesting concept, if they have your snail mail address perhaps they could just drop on over for some tea, and cookies too.

Too, I agree that I would want to know about bounce-backs... but for a Post Card, (especially a BUISINESS looking one) you would likely have to put "Return Postage Guaranteed" to get them back from the Post Office. (and then PAY for them… but it would be worth it!)

Now that I have made my cheap attempt at a joke I will offer my honest opinion, I think what goes on the post card in one form or the another should be. "What I can do for you that makes you want to contact me".

Al & Dean:
Yes, I definitely use a PO Box for a return address. Also, I have been fortunate so far in that undeliverable mail has been returned to me without the "return postage guaranteed", although that is not a bad suggestion, along with "forwarding information requested". Doesn't have to be large type either. 1¢ more... Chris |

Most mail that is not 'perceived' as bulk marketing mail has a greater chance of NOT getting returned, ESPECIALLY marketing Post Cards. Too it depends on how BIG the mailing is as well.
Certainly there is no cut n’ dry, hard n’ fast rule as to whether the post office will do there part UNLESS (and then even then some even still…) your comply with postal standards. But, when it comes to the Postal Service... NOTHING is standard, eh'? (Unless the constancy of inconstancy is a standard!) Thinking of YOU and your Success! I have used netpost (a company that works with the US postal system) to do many of my mailings. I always include a return address, and usually get a few back that had wrong mailing information. I assumed that's what a return address was for.
One question -- why would you be afraid to put your own return address on a letter or postcard? Heck, if the owner of a company or the principal of a school wants to drop over and have tea, I'd say that's a pretty motivated prospect!

Do you put your home address on your business card? I have a friend who is constantly getting phone calls while he is performing, he asked me how I deal with this problem, and I told him to take his cell phone number off of his business card, and web site, he told me that he doesn't want to miss any calls, he doesn't get it.
