But you can still call other magicians anonymously in your area, find out what they're charging, and figure out where you want to fit yourself in that range. The idea of "fitting a market" rather than a geographical area is great for seasoned pros, but penandpaper52 clearly stated that he/she was starting out. Therefore s/he is no doubt targeting an immediate geographical area, and the smart way to do this is to know what others are charging to get an idea of the consequences in the market of charging more or less.

Pen and Paper -
About two months ago I woke up on a Monday morning and had lost complete hearing in my left ear. I went to bed just fine, woke up on Monday 1/2 deaf. I went to the doctor to find out what was wrong. Now what price would you pay to have your hearing repaired, what is the price of good health, how much would you spend to have a problem (not being able to hear) fixed. My answer was that I would spend every dime I had to regain my hearing. I was willing to spend every dollar I had to fix this problem. When you stop selling a product and start selling a service or fixing a painful problem you can charge more than others. Listen to your clients, find out their wants and needs and goals for bringing you in and they will open their wallets to you. Oh and after some nasty antibotics to cure an inner ear infection I can hear again in my left ear again. When you solve their problem you open their checkbook. |

There are still lots more free insights to be found with the SEARCH Tool. It’s gunna take a small bit of WORK, (sorry for swearing! Ha!) but that is LIFE in the success industry, PLUS what has been offered here is good stuff to add to it all.
Seams like PenAndPaper52 is no longer interested in the subject... still good stuff guys! Thanks!

And on the matter of pricing: Do you want to be known as the budget magician who gets all the clients who only want the cheapest show they can find, and then complain about it being too expensive? Or do you want to be known as the top-of-the-line magician who charges a premium for a premium show, and the client thinks it's a great investment? I would prefer to be the latter, but you can't always start there. It all starts with having a great show--if you don't, you can't charge top rates, and you're going to end up with disappointed clients. At the same time, don't price yourself super low either. If someone doesn't book you because they only want cheap without regard to quality, you may not want them as a client. Heck, I even have a client quote on my website that says:
"...At first I thought the price was a little high but once I saw the performance...realized the high quality...and realized that my ENTIRE PARTY was taken care of...I decided it was a bargain!!!" If you're just starting, have someone you trust call around and get pricing information from the competition in the area (which will be magicians, clowns, reptile guy, etc.). Make sure you give the person a list of questions to ask, and find out what all is included in their show so that you can do a fair comparison. There's nothing wrong with this, everyone does it, not just in this field but everywhere in business--you HAVE to know your competition, and that includes pricing. |

Price only matters if you're in the business to satisfy price shoppers. If you offer a show so creative and unique (haha, unique, everytime I read that on someone's website I laugh) you can charge whatever you want. I know in San Diego if I took the 4-5 "professional" magicians pictures and names and mixed them up I'd have no idea what name goes with what photo. The point is to stand out to the client and POSITION yourself to where they come to you and ask you to perform at their event, then they ask a price! Josh London |

Another reeason what I described above happens so much with magicians is because they all are too interested in meeting with eachother, telling stories, buying the newest trick, etc. to really put time and effort into creating something original that will make them stand out.
I personally believe that with my current theatrial strategy of having a show about a guy who tells about his triumphs and failures through life by being in jail, etc. makes my show much more appealing. I had to spend years figuring out what it is that I did well. And I came to find out that when I tell stories I tell them with conviction and passion that gets people EMOTIONALLY interested. This whole talk about fees is utterly useless. No one should ever care what someone else charges...unless you are in the magic business to soley compete with other magicians. Josh London |
