I have been working on writing up my variation of the Devlin Silk Mystery that can be found as the very last effect in Rice's Encyclopedia Volume 1. The basic effect remains unchanged, except that I show some other designs for the Spider Banner, including a Christmas Tree for seasonal work, and show how to perform it solo. In fact, I am calling the effect "Silks to Christmas Tree Mystery." It wouldn't be much of a mystery for magicians except for the way Devlin vanishes six silks in a plain metal tube that can be tossed into the audience at the end. I bring it up to date by doing the same thing with a clear transparent "crystal tube" so you can see the silks being stuffed into it and then they all vanish at once before I hand the tube to my helper from the audience who is sure to inspect it for them.
When I started doing this effect back in 'da day, I actually used the same crystal tube that is used for blowing three separate silks into three knotted together silks and made that part of the routine. Anyway, the effect has just been published in The Wizards' Journal #15 on my site if anyone wants to know. I am using subtleties that were included in the original Devlin routine that didn't make it into the Rice adaptation, and I hope to get permission to include a reprint of the original Devlin Routine from a 1947 Abracadabra article, but even without that you will definitely have a new silk effect to try out for the season. If you don't have time to make one this year, you have a whole year to begin planning ahead for next season!

Professor Spellbinder,
Just change the picture and you'll have your Easter basket trick with colored Easter eggs. (I doubt that the tube will know the difference!) Merry Christmas! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thanks for that idea, Bob. I have several other suggested designs for the banner in the article, but did not think of that one!

I just received permission from Walt Lees, current editor of Abracadabra at Goodliffe Publications to include the article "Devlin's Silk Mystery" with my own "Silks to Christmas Tree" effect. Previous purchasers will receive the updated file automatically, but if you don't get it within 24 hours from the posting date here, something went wrong and you should send me an e-mail to get the full article with Devlin's article included.
