Just a few thoughts:
First, gaffed cards are allowed in fism competitions. However, the act as a whole, mainly focusing on the performers talent and presentation is what decides who will take the prize. Lennart Green was disqualifed, since, with the use of gaffed cards, his act would not have been impressive. However, without gaffed cards, it was simply astonishing, as you can see (Green Magic Volume 1). Other magicians win using gaffed cards because their use is only a part of their act, incorporated well, and still requiring skill to use them. If it were up to me, I would say that the contestants should be judged on skill alone and the gaffs left to the invention category. However, that is just an opinion, and one that fism doesn't entirely share. While it is a magic competition, and magic is performed, certainly presentation is just as important for magicians. However, I would feel somewhat cheated as a magician spectator if a man with incredible skill was beaten by a man with respectable skill and a better presentation. Certainly, the latter might be a better performer, but the former is what I would classify as a world-champion magician. Fortunately though, most fism winners possess both great talent and impeccable performance. I just place the emphasis first on technical ability. -Gene |

Why should we judge a magician's abilities purely on "technical" skills involving no gaffs, etc. when in stage magic many, if not most props (including those used in manipulation i.e. ball shells and super thin and bendy cards), are essential gaffs? Putting restrictions on what one can and can not do in contests only limits us from future growth.
