I have a version of this except that both sides are pulled apart at the same time and the head moves back and forth. I had it built by Illusions by your Design many years ago.

Bruce Chadwick builds and sells something similar called, "Split Personality".
You can see it here... Bruce Chadwick's "Split Personality"

That is very simular to mine except mine opens a lttle bit more, the head box is much smaller and moves from side to side. If you go to my web site there is some video footage of it on the site.

I guess it was late at night and I got things mixed up. Aztec Girl was a vertical sawing in half and then half again. I remember someone posting actual video footage of Harbin performing it. The illusion Bruce Chadwick was pictured with was only one of three made many years ago with the Egyptian motif. I forget exactly what it was called .. anyone remember??
I have a cool Vertical Sawing that can bee seen on the Abbott's 1992 video. If only I knew how to get that stuff up on Youtube. Steve |

Hi
Abbotts has a pic of Chezaday's vertical sawing from the 1992 Get Together Gallery, below is the link http://www.magicgettogether.com/gallerie......day2.htm |

Nice illusion Steve. Do you still perform it?

It's actually been a while since we performed that one. I've actually got version three of this illusion in my notebooks. Pictured is version two ... with the chainsaw.
I don't think the Get-Togethers were quite the same after that night ... Steve |

Hmm. Nuts- didn't see that picture earlier, Chezaday. I've been working on designing a vertical sawing illusion that looks somewhat similiar (except in mine, both the assistant's hands and feet are visible.) Not sure mine is different enough for the sake of copyright, though I swear it's not based off it. Maybe I should scrap mine and start from scratch... (thankfully it hasn't reached the build stage yet.)
Anyone have thoughts on this?

You've done the right thing by coming here and being open about your design. I'm sure you and Steve can work something out between you without anyone else's involvement. I thought I noticed hand holes on Steve's version but didn't see hands so not sure. Plus, the pic is in black and white so wasn't sure if they were just part of the design.

From what I can see on his website, the illusion starts with boxes for both arms attached to the frame. I'm guessing they are cut off during performance as indicated by the pictures on Chezaday's website listed here.

Okay, those pics make it a bit more clear; it's much less similar than I had initially thought. There's no dismemberment in my vertical sawing (well, apart from the vertical sawing), and I'll bet the method's different.
Steve, PM me if you've got any concerns, but at this point, I think we're both cool.

Nice detective work boys .. I'm impressed. Version two of the Vertical Sawing both hands, arms, legs, feet and profile of the girls face are revealed. The arms are removed at one point and the box is split from top to bottom. Once again the parts are revealed on both halves .. it's pretty cool, if I do say so myself.
Version three will go a few steps further ... one of these days. Steve |
