Product: Silver Shifter
Creators: Keith Arlen Lack and Steve Brooks Available from: Arlen Studio , Hocus Pocus Video Demo: Click Here! Price: $42 at Hocus-Pocus (Suggested retail is $50) Angles: Surrounded. Difficulty – 1.5 for the coin bend (on a scale of 1 to 5) Varies for other effects. Description: “The Silver Shifter is like no other coin device available. With it, you actually bend a coin right in front of your spectator. The coin bends VISUALLY, and never leaves the sight of your spectator during the bend! Once bent, you can drop the coin into their hand for inspection. It is truly astonishing! No funny switches. No funny palm off’s. No pressure. No heat. No KIDDING! At the end, both hands are shown empty front and back. This one will fool Magicians and Layman alike! You can also use the device to do a coin vanish or production. You have seen a coin melt down through someone's hand but have you ever seen a coin melt UP? That's right! With SILVER SHIFTER, you can do just that!” My Review: So is the description accurate? A coin does visually bend whilst never leaving the site of your spectator. 100% correct. As can be seen from the video, you briefly cover the coin but after this you immediately open the hand and pass the spectator a coin. The spectator can take the bent coin and see both sides of your hands empty. They can inspect the bent coin as much as they wish. I must point out that the Silver Shifter is much much more diverse than the coin bend routine. It is hard to go into any detail without giving the secret away. There will be a ton of ideas stem from the Silver Shifter, and to my mind it is the most diverse coin utility to hit the magic market to date. It is a very clever gimmick. You will easily think of 4 or 5 ideas by the time you finish reading the instructions. The routines that I have read in the instructions are all very strong. It will make tricks like 3 Fly, Fickle Nickel, coin melts, floating, vanishes etc. very effective and a lot easier to perform. So are there any down sides? I am not personally blown away by the coin bend routine. If I was planning to bend metal, a spoon would be more impressive. A spoon bend is more visual and there is no fathomable way that you could switch cutlery without the spectator watching. Don’t get me wrong, the coin bend is still extremely visual, clean and easier to do + it is more impossible for a lay person to bend a coin with their bare hands then a spoon or fork. I just prefer the cutlery bend – personal taste. I think the up sides of the silver shifter as a utility device make this down side negligible. Summary and overall marks for the product: As a metal bend: 7 out of 10. As a coin utility: It rocks like a wet noodle. If you are into coin magic, this will strengthen your arsenal! 9.5 out of 10. Value for money: 9.5 out of 10 $42 may seem a lot of money. I am sure I am like 99.5% of other magicians who have at some time or another opened a new gimmicked trick and said to myself, “Is that it? – I can’t believe I paid that much for this.” However, with Silver Shifter I can clearly appreciate the amount of work, time and creative thinking that must have gone into it + feel that the very high quality of the gimmick validates the price. There are other tricks where this is the case too. It is hard to fairly price magic products as in a lot of cases you are just paying for the secret. Trust me, $42 is good value for money for the Silver Shifter, when I compare it to some other tricks (which I will not name.) I’d like to thank Keith and Steve for giving me the opportunity to review this excellent groundbreaking product. I think providing an average magic hobbyist a test run of a product gives buyers the confidence that they are not just buying into hype. Not that I am accusing any of the magicians that you have given test run products to would deliberately create hype. All of their posts that I have ever read have been nothing but honest. jimesw, for the record can you state whether you bought the product yourself or were given a free one to review?

Hi Winston
For the record I was given one as a test run. I inquired why the product was being given to professional magicians to test who were probably friends of Keith and Steve. I suggested someone neutral test run the product. It was a semi throw away remark and I was half joking. I was pleasantly surprised when Keith offered me a test run of the SS. I have also been informed that Steve and Keith have never met some of the people asked to test run the product. It was a bad assumption on my part. I can assure you that no money has changed hands (apart from the silver shifter ) Cheers Jimesw http://www.thehungersite.com |

Very good review Jimesw. Also it was very good of Steve and Keith to offer a SS for an impartial review.
Looks like SS is going to be a winner. |

Wait I'm confused. When the coin bends is there a switch that must be done as I would expect or do they actually inspect the gimmicked coin?

OH no not that Silver shifter again I thought we had seem the last of it on this forum but no here we go again this is no more than an average coin trick, I returned mine to my dealer for a full refund. If you want a great coin packet trick buy Scotch and Soda or one of the many great tricks on the market, this is not one of them. Rating 3/10.

Surely it's not an average coin trick - it's a g*****k to be utilised in coin tricks, average or otherwise, enhanced or otherwise by use of the SS .

I think if silver Shift was a quarter, it would be more effective. Then you could borrow the coin and hand them a bent one. Then it would be a miracle, like scotch and Soda.

Sorry John if I have ruffled your feathers but I thought this forum was to express our opinions and I feel that silver shifter is a less than average coin trick. I thought I would end with some positive thoughts as you seem to think I have none. So here are a few of the many tricks I love, but silver shifter aint one of em.
Triple impact Knock em Dead Just passin Thru Die Cipher 2 Scotch and Soda Twisted Sister And not to forget the Svengali Deck, still slays the laymen. Oh no not another silver shifter. |

With the many "States" quarters, how does one handle the situation when you borrow a Georgia quarter and you bend a non-Georgia quarter? Is the Silver Shifter quarter made only in the old-style generic quarter? Or is this "States" quarter thing never an issue or concern during performances?

Hey folks,
Im sorry to say that I completely agree with gerry. I had read the posts regarding this gimmick and was interested to see it in action up close as well as peek at the gimmick itself. When I saw it performed I laughed out loud. The gimmick is ridiculously obvious and unimpressive. I hate posting bad reviews because I know people put a lot of time and effort into creating new and unique effects. However, I have to warn people against this one. Sorry if this upsets the creators that was not my intention. |
