You can take sponge balls anywhere, anyplace, anytime. They get the gasps, they get the laughs, they get the money.
I agree with Bill and Timdini. Pack small, play as big as you want? You got it. Along with the TT, sponge balls are still up there in the top 3 of my most requested close-up routines. Of course, I never get asked, "Do your TT routine - it's great..!" But - you know what I mean. TT and sponge balls - don't leave home without them. And, keep them clean. I use 3" yellows now, as I work in "dim" joints... DCB

I used Mark Wilson's book on sponge magic also, and I have to say that the sponge thru pocket is killer. It has a multi-phase in their hands, too...great book. I learned the sponge routine from it when I was 9-11.

G'day Best,
I regularly perform a slightly modified version of the routine from Mark Wilson's book using yellow sponge balls for audiences of all ages. I learned that working in poor light with red sponge balls can end in lost props, as the assistant gets a real shock when the balls keep multiplying in their hands - and they drop them on the floor. That's one of the reasons I really prefer to work with cubes. They don't roll.

The reason why I don't like Dr. Jacks' ending is that you end up on your knees getting your little sponges back: not a very dignifying anti-climax.
For the color, in my own routine, I do a color change halfway through, starting with red and getting into yellow. Regarding the shape, Bill, as always, is giving a much wiser and practical advice than it seems. One little thing which seems obvious but that is unfortunately not: always perform with clean sponge balls. (I've seen many performers all over the world not realizing that they were putting dirty sponges in ladies' hands.)

That's a very good piece of advice from Lawrence O. From time to time, take a look at all of your props, especially if you perform in restaurants. If you were sitting down, waiting for your food to come, would you like to have somebody put a set of dirty sponges in your hand? What about your coins?

It's an interesting concept. The only part about them that might be a problem in a restaurant is that some people might (for whatever reason!) think they were actually used as ear plugs. Then, they would not want to handle them.
This may sound far fetched, but there are various reflex-level things that go through people's minds when they are eating. Some people cannot watch sword swallowers without their gorge rising.

Love sponge balls. "World's Greatest" is good, as is "The Sponge Book."
Another reason to keep them clean is if they can tell them apart, you are blown. "No, that one is darker..." Any mark can be a problem. I too use yellow; as I will never where yellow, it gives good contrast against what I have on. Red balls don't show the dirt as easily.

A handling tip for sponge balls:
Getting them together and keeping them together in your pocket can be a problem. However, the ceramic gimmicked egg for Silk to Egg will hold SIX 2" sponge balls, and they pop out like a box of Kleenex for use. I never show the egg but use the brown one so it doesn't flash either! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I also have various cubes that I got with Benson bowls, etc. If you want to make sponge cubes, use an electric knife. They make a clean cut without compressing the sponge. As an alternative, a straight razor will work, but be careful. A straight razor can really hack you up, and you won't know it until your sponge cubes turn red.

Micheal Ammar's cups and balls are good to get; teaches you quite a lot in 3 DVDs.
