OK, though I know I’ll regret saying this…
for an inexpensive and unusual levitation AND production combined, the video of this looks pretty cute, and fun for the audience. Not “$10,000 equipment” amazing mind you, but portable, and workable looking, for the low price. The video is on Tilford’s website and it’s supposed to be an exclusive with them…. I’ve only read the copy below and watched the video, so don’t ask me questions I can’t answer, this is just FYI if you like affordable and portable big stuff. Magically, Walt ------------------------------------------ After creating one of the most innovative illusions of all time, a new version of the Gift Surprise goes beyond the original one created in 2002. The 2008 Gift Surprise allows you to perform, in any place or circumstance, the appearance of a partner, a teenager, a dancer, a boy, Santa Claus or anyone you can imagine. -Handy, original, surprising and astonishing. -The magician is absolutely free. He just has to guide the cart. -The illusion has no angle problems, can be performed surrounded. -The partner comes out of the box walking. -The magician does not have to make any effort, can focus energy on performance. -The box appears to float weightless, even with the magician away. Basic Description: You roll out a cart (supplied) that is holding a large gift box. Suddenly the box begins to float up off the cart. Stunned, you walk over and push it back down. Once again it rises high into the air. Keep in mind, you are well away from the illusion. You grab the box by it's bow and lift and shake it. It is obviously empty and virtually weightless as you shake it vigorously. You set it back down on the cart and open the top as a balloon flies up and out. Instantly, your assistant pops out and exits through the side. This unique illusion combines elements of a levitation as well as a surprise appearance. The perfect opener! Once he finishes the act, the cart folds in half by only unscrewing two wing nuts. The cardboard folds up, so both elements take up a 40in x 23in x 12in space and weight 39 lb. This makes the illusion easy to be carried in any car trunk and handy to be stored. The illusion includes a DVD with a clear explanation. |

The origin of this illusion confuses me. Anton Corradin claims to have invented it in 2002, Paul Daniels performed it on television in the late 90's and Andrew Mayne has it in one of his books in 2001 as an original illusion.
Can anyone tell me the real origin of this? Best, Tim |

Paul is standing behind the box where this 2008 version has the magician standing away from the box. I thought of Pauls version right away too.
That's where I see an angle problem... Especially high on a stage.

I can see how it would make the illusion much more angle proof as well. I'm still interested in the origin of the original version however if anyone knows. Best, Tim |

Here's the video link for those just lurking. It DOES look pretty angle resistant the more I watch it.

Daniels seems to be the origin,
but Corridan seems to have worked on angle problems. For little money it is a clever illusion, and the technique has possibilities beyond a gift box theme. I wonder how the lighting effects the work of the cart? Right on the ball with crediting Tim, I count on you and Max to keep history from getting revised. Thanks! Walt |

I think it would make for a better presentation if someone else would deliver the package to the stage, but it's a cute illusion.

Should we be supporting a guy who's building and selling Interlude knock-offs?
It's all in the reflexes.

This appears to be built on the same technology as his first Gift trick.

Alright then, should we be supporting someone who retails unauthorized knock-offs?

If magicians stopped buying the knock-offs, like any retailer, he would likely stop selling the knock-offs. I would prefer that he not sell the knock-offs but, apparently, there's a market for them and he is taking advantage of that. The key to stopping the production of knock-offs is for magicians to stop buying them! (Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be likely.) Michael |

I won´t buy anything from someone, who is also selling rip-offs. I can´t trust someone, who isn´t trying to be correct in each point and won´t support it indirectly.
And for the topic-levitation: I saw it already a few month ago and it did nothing at all to me! Well it can be done surrounded, but that´s all. The old version of Paul Daniels is much more magical. The topic-version is much more obvious! The box floating up off the cart while being away from the illusion, supports the transparentness of the support-workings (and betrays maybe to the audience, that there might be someone inside). |
