Has anybody bought / use the magnetic version of the cane to table and is it as good as the expensive version ?. I am very interested in the fact that it states in the advert that it has a magnetic top to the cane so it will easily hold a top hat .......... or does it. Is the magnet a very strong magnet and would the hat fall off if it was given a slight nudge etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
A link to the one I am talking about can be found here: http://www.williamsmagic.com/index.php?m......id=16740 Many Thanks, Stuart Brown British Magical Champion Of Stage Manipulation 2007

I have the Neilsen cane to table and another I build myself before I bought the Neilsen. The one I have and the Neilsen both are quite stable. Before buying one of these props you should see it in person or be able to return it. Many of these can be easily tipped over.

It is not as well made as the more expensive models! But then what does one expect for $150.00. It is made in India. The legs are on the flimsy side and are held together with rivets at the support points/hinge points. It is fairly fragile and the rivet joints can be broken easily. I watched a demonstrator at a magic convention break two of the things simply folding the legs back into the body of the cane! I bought one of the broken canes for less than half price and repaired it. I've used it for a couple of years now for a specific purpose (silk holder).
It is not designed to hold any significant weight. A very light weight hat as a dump for a few cards or a simple table top made from say cardboard covered with some light felt will work. One could fabricate a cross piece that looked like a magic wand to balance on the top of the cane (held in place by the magnets) to hold silks for a silk routine. It has its uses but remember to handle it with care.

You can also ask the guys from Williams Magic if these canes are made in India... My guess is it might be made somewhere Asia...
