Just received my Strong Box today. Sad to say, I'm not too impressed with the exterior quality of the box. The finish had a lot of scratches that made it look like I bought it second hand. (bought it retail though) I will say that the box does FEEL high quality and is visually impressive. It just looks a little scuffed up..
The loading of the box is clever and I like how you can act like you're "pulling" on the lock to make sure it is secure. The gaff holds very well. But, the box is too noisy when loading coins, rings, cards, well anything. I don't care for Bloom's routine even though it covers up the noise nicely. So,I will just have to do the loading very quickly and bring it out so laymen believe the noise came from the padlock swinging. Also, the box is VERY small. I knew this going in but looking at it up close is even smaller than I imagined. I can barely fit 3 Morgan's and a [ inside with a small bag. I had to take my coins out of their JOL holder and put them in a thinner bag so they would fit. Though, the box will comfortably load a mercury folded playing card, and ring. Just will make noise. I recommend Viking's box for the money because it has an easier load and beautiful wood finish at a much lower price. I recommend the Strong Box if you're a collector and/or like the looks of it and have money to blow. Best, Doug L.

I love my Viking box!
Can't really speak for the others, but I'm sure they're good.

I think Michael Baker may still have an inventory of these boxes.

The Lippincott Box looks to be a good addition to any magician's inventory.
Although it seems they would not stand close inspection by spectators. Mickey Soumé |

If you can find one, I recommend the Clarence Miller Lippincott Box. The gimmick is unlike anything I've ever seen. Unfortunately, Mr. Miller made less than 25 of these incredibly crafted boxes (he confirmed that to me by phone last week). Each one is signed, numbered, and dated. I am lucky to have #11 It would be awesome if any craftsmen would be willing to recreate Mr. Miller's extremely unique construction of his box (hint, hint to George Robinson of Viking!)

Clarence Miller Lippincott Box. Completely diabolical and virtually undetectable mechanics for laymen and magicians alike.

Clarence Miller also manufactured three of my effects; The Roller Box, the Transposo Boxes and my version of Colorvision cube and box. THey were also available through KY Magic.

MagicLaw,
Thanks for posting the picture. Any chance you'd be interested in selling it? |

Does anyone know anything about the "Lippincott Plus"? I've only seen it sold at Hank Lee's, but I don't know for sure if he has the exclusive rights to it or not.
I'm looking for a good wooden one, but I need one that will hold a ring and withstand fairly close inspection. Quite is a plus too! I have to be able to load it in full view of the audience. That's the one thing I am worried about. I was thinking about the Delta Ring Box, but it is rather pricey and I don't know if it is worth the difference or not. It's description says a spectator can hold and even open the box, and that..."the inlay box hides the secret even upon close inspection by magicians". It sounds really nice, but someone told me it has to be loaded while removing it from a bag (or other cover I guess). I have not seen one in real so I can't say but I would love to hear a review of it. Thanks! Regan

Can anyone recommend a Lippincott Box for walkaround? One that doesn't make a huge bulge in your pocket. The Viking Lippincott Box looks rather small does anybody have this box? If so, could you please give me the dimensions of it?? Thanks

Tabman currently sells a nice Lippincott Box that is velvet lined and has an extra special something added to it for other effects. It is a really nice little box and can be inspected closely by spectators. I cannot recall the dimensions but I am sure if you go to http://www.tabmantables.com and check it out, or send an e-mail, they can tell you how big it is. It is somewhat similar to the Lippincott Plus from Hank Lee.
I have a Viking box and I from what I can tell it is about 1 13/16" inside x 13/16" deep, 1 3/8" outside x 1 3/8. That is visually guessing the metric measurements and then converting them to inches. To compare, it is really just big enough to hold a U.S. Silver Dollar coin, and it works very well for walkaround because it is not all that bulgy in pockets - but it should have its own pocket. A great alternative to the Lippincott Box is a Brass or Aluminum Nest of Boxes, such as the type for coins, assuming that is what you are using with the Lippincott. Some can also handle a finger ring. Most dealers have these available. I hope this information is useful to you. |

Can I take this thread in another direction, but still the same direction.
Other than a box, what would you have a ring appear in or on, for example any ring flight or the Regal Chain etc. Collectors Workshop has the Tang Dynasty Chest, where the ring is inside a tea bag that is inside a box with several tea bags. |

I use it more in my parlor shows and formal sit-down close-up shows. It works with just about anything that you want: coins, cards (folded), keys, rings, etc. You can tie just about anything into the props to make the decor work for whatever you are using. The only thing is the Tang box is larger than a Lippincott box, which makes it not so great for walkaround/strolling work, at least for me and my style. Thanks for putting that out there Dave! |
