Okay, to be perfectly honest... I love card tricks. I am also an avid gaff maker. Put the two together and I can't imagine anyone not loving this book.
Magicbob has created a series of exceptionally clever tricks, coupling unique gaffs with premises that reach far beyond the "pick-a-card" standard. The items in the book pay tribute to a variety of classic stage illusions, bringing them off the stage and into the hands of the close-up worker. There are ten effects in total and although some are better than others you will be hard pressed to find any "dogs" among the bunch. In addition to the ten terrific effects, the reader is treated to a tutorial on card printing using a standard ink-jet printer. The tutorial and the included, highly original graphic designs are, alone, pretty well worth the cost of the book, making the total package an absolute bargain. Be aware... the book is currently being offered at a highly discounted price which is only in effect through the end of 2007. On January 1st the price will double (but will still be worth the cost). Other points to keep in mind: - If you don't enjoy constructing and printing the required props then this book may not be for you (unless you are content with simply reading the wonderfully constructed pdf files and absorbing the ideas without the desire to perform the tricks)... still worth the price! - You will need a few inexpensive craft supplies, blank faced cards, access to an ink-jet printer, and a few other items to produce the necessary gaffs. This e-book gets my highest recommendation. I'm eagerly looking forward to more of Magicbob's material in the (hopefully) near future. Buy it HERE |

Each and every effect in this e-book would cost you more than the price of the book if they were available in a magic shop.
These are not pipe dreams, but fully detailed and worked out tricks with every step of construction covered in full detail. This is the type of book that rarely comes around, so do not miss out, grab a copy today. I Highly Recommend "I Hate Card Tricks" by Magicbob, kick off 2008, and make it great, with a great book of solid material that YOU WILL DEFINATELY USE. All the Best Marty |

Whoa - I just bought this and it looks incredible.
I love making gaffs and learned from the Martini DVD (thanks, Martini!) and Versatile Monte. I've only been doing it for a few months, but I've been spending a ton of time splitting, reassembling, printing and making other gimmicks. These projects will take me a while to work out, but I hope to give independent reviews of at least 4 or 5 of the tricks in a few weeks. In the mean time, I would say that if you can get this before the price goes up, do it. This is an entire, themed act, all in one cheap book. As said above, the routines are very thoroughly thought out with strong, detailed instructions and explained and I am thrilled that I bought this. A gaff-maker's dream! It is actually shocking that this package is offered for this price. |

I was going to mention that Marty wrote several in-depth reviews on another thread but, rather than making you wade through all the other posts there, I decided to do a little cutting and pasting. That way the reviews are all right here in one handy location.

I was honored to receive an e-mail from Aldo Colombini yesterday. He stated that he doesn't have the time to frequent forums such as these, but gave his permission for me to share his comments here.

I just wanted to chime in with a little note about this ebook. I was intrigued with the idea of creating my own small scale stage illusions with cards. After reading the webpage, I was hooked. The ebook definitely delivers. Its a huge 230 page book. Fully detailed instructions with pictures for constructing these mini stage illusions. If you enjoy building your own props, you will be tickled with this ebook. Even if you don't end up using any of the illusions, the book is just a joy to read, and a nice addition to any magic collection. Highly recommended!

I have to agree....this ebook is great. I love to make my own gaffs and this ebook gives you some good stuff to make each with a great premise. I would like to also add that the magic nook offers a lot of "make it yourself" items that are great.

Alright, I just wanted to follow up my general comments with a review.
THE ZIGZAG QUEEN Effect: The spectator is handed a queen to inspect, as well as a small "cabinet" made from two cards. The spectator places the queen in the cabinet. You show the queen is visible from both the front and back of the cabinet, then proceeds to pull the center 1/3 of the card out from the cabinet, while the top and bottom remain stationary. The cabinet can be made so that the queen and cabinet can be examined from both sides when the center is pulled out to its limit. Then, you push the the center panel back, flip the card to show the queen restored from the front and back and hand the cabinet to the spectator, who may remove the restored queen and inspect the cabinet. This was my first stab at a Magicbob trick from the I Hate Card Tricks book. I found the instructions were perfectly clear, in addition to the explanation for how to perform with the gaffs. The trick looks great and I had no problem putting it together on my first try, which took about an hour and a half. I am really excited about doing a few more items from the book in the next week or two, which I will be glad to review. You could easily put together a whole Stage Illusions routine with cards based on this book. I will get months of fun out of this. |

I received an e-mail from Kenton Knepper the other day with some comments about the e-book. Kenton had this to say:
Quote:
"An astonishingly different book, like you have never seen before. Wild effects that demand attention even from haters of card tricks. Remarkably different and visual. I dare say some of these would fool you badly too." He also suggested that I consider publishing this as a hard copy book. I may consider doing that if the demand is there. Is the average person willing to pay a little extra for a physical book, or does everyone pretty much prefer e-book format with lower cost?

I'd splurge and pick up a hard copy, if available. Bob, you should check out the print-on-demand options for this.

Martin Lewis had this to say about "The I Hate Card Tricks" Book of Card Tricks in a recent e-mail:
Quote:
I really like this e-book. All the effects are great. Keep up the good work! I really cannot think of any way to improve it. This kind of novel, visual magic is right up my alley - well done! Martin has also joined the chorus of voices recommending publishing this as a print book. I'm going to research the options and will make an announcement if it will be published as a print book. In the meantime, I'm continuing work on the sequel... The "I STILL Hate Card Tricks" Book of Card Tricks. It will be coming soon at: http://www.magicnook.com/magicbob

I have had the good fortune of previewing one of the new tricks from Magicbob's sequel, "The I Still Hate Cardtricks Book of Card Tricks." It is every bit as clever (maybe more so) as any of the items from the first book. A hard copy book would be terrific, or... perhaps you should just publish books 1 & 2 together as a collected hardbound edition.
I cannot recommend this material highly enough. Great stuff!! |

You can now go to the webpage for a preview of the new book.
http://www.magicnook.com/magicbob/STILL/STILL.htm The book is currently about 60-70% complete. I'm shooting for a release date sometime between Valetine's Day and March 1st. I'll announce here when it launches.

I just wanted to chime in with my thoughts on this book. This is a great book - clever adaptations of stage illusions that you can perform in the palm of your hand. I read through the whole book in one sitting I was so excited by the material. I just received it a couple of days ago, so I have only made a couple of the gaffs so far - sawing a lady in half and the cremation chamber. Both were easy to construct and were very clearly explained, as are all the gaffs. I will probably go through and make all the gaffs in the book to see which I like to perform the most and which get the best reaction. So far, the cremation chamber is my favorite (unlike Marty, I LOVE effects that utilize fire). The production values on this are quite good, with lots of clear photographs and the writing is concise and without noticeable spelling and grammatical mistakes (all too common with many ebooks). I received my files within a couple of hours, then printed them out and took them down to Staples where they comb-bound them with plastic covers for just a few dollars, so I can easily go through all the pages (this is quite a large book). Also, Bob includes picture files of the various cards needed for the effects, at full size so they are easy to print - a great bonus and one more indication of the care that went into this book. If the premise appeals to you (even if it doesn't, you will probably be pleasantly surprised and wind up liking the material in spite of yourself), this is an excellent value. I give this 10/10!

I've been getting a lot of inquiries about the effects in the e-book I'm currently working on ("I STILL Hate Card Tricks"). Since I also offer them separately as individual effects, I've decided to go ahead and release the seven that are currently complete.
******************************************* The following effects should be available to order soon at The Magic Nook: The Origami Queen This effect was inspired by Jim Steinmeyer's "Origami" illusion made famous by David Copperfield. As I stated in the preface of The "I Hate Card Tricks" Book of Card Tricks, a literal adaptation of this effect would not be very deceptive using a flat playing card. I felt that this remarkable illusion deserved to be represented, however, so I set out to develop a method using cards that would be astonishing. A signed Queen is placed into an envelope. The envelope is folded into a small packet. When it is unfolded, the signed Queen is removed completely intact. It has not been folded. In Over His Head How long can a playing card hold its breath? The King of Hearts reenacts the death-defying "Water Torture Cell" escape made famous by Houdini. The King is locked into the cell and placed “underwater.” The spectator verifies that the King is securely shackled. Yet, he escapes effortlessly right before the spectator’s eyes. The spectator handles all the props before and after the effect. You can even let them take the whole thing home as a souvenir! Royal Interlude This effect was inspired by Jim Steinmeyer's "Interlude" illusion. A signed King is placed into a playing card "cabinet." The Queen passes directly through the King. Both cards (as well as the "cabinet") can be examined before and after the effect. Jack B. Quick The Jack moves so quickly that the spectator can't keep up. Each phase becomes progressively more impossible. Just when it seems as if Jack has vanished completely, he turns up in an impossible location such as a wallet or even the spectator’s pocket! The Jack even jumps right into the spectator’s own hands! Finally, the Jack is signed. The card is shaken rapidly back and forth causing the Jack to become visibly blurred. Includes a bonus handling that allows you to perform this effect as a follow-on to "Jack B. Nimble." The Fifth Beatle Each of the “Fab Four” is pictured on a card. On a fifth card is some unknown guy... “The Fifth Beatle.” You are their manager. Which Beatle is going to get fired? As you show the cards, the band members keep changing. In the end, you are fired and go on to manage a new group, "The Beetles." The cards are shown again and they have all changed into beetles (insects). Whatever became of “The Fifth Beatle?” He is transformed into a Volkswagon Beetle. TBA Originally, this title was just a place-holder (TBA = "to be announced"). But given my penchant for puns, I decided to stick with the name. Only, in this case, it stands for TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY! Three cards are shown and placed face-down on the table: a Jack, a Queen, and a time bomb. The included patter is based on the popular television series "24." The effect, however, is not dependent upon that theme. Feel free to develop your own storyline if you like. You introduce Jack Bauer (the Jack, of course) and his assistant, Chloe (the Queen). As usual, they are up against the clock to find and disarm a terrorist bomb. The cards are mixed up (no fancy Three Card Monte moves required). No matter how hard he tries, the spectator can't avoid the bomb. The reason... terrorists never plant just one bomb. You reveal that all three cards have changed to bombs. Just to make things fair you give him one last chance. Not only does the spectator choose the bomb, it has exploded and made a mess of the other cards! Girls Gone Wild! In this "naughty" effect, Jokers represent guys on spring break in search of some ladies. You alternate between showing Jokers and Queens. For the shocking finale, you show (in perhaps the most revealing revelation ever) four TOPLESS Queens! Also includes a 100% clean version ("Totally Wild Jokers") with a Poker theme. Jokers change into five different cards and back. Then they change into a Royal Flush with different color backs! ************************************** The remaining three should be finished up before too long. I'm getting "Geometric Queen" finished up (hopefully this week). "Connecticut Yankee" is technically complete, but I still have one loose end to tie up before it is released. A number of people have expressed interest in pre-ordering this e-book. I'm going to do one better and offer a $5 off pre-order discount. Just add seven effects from this e-book to your shopping cart and notate that you are pre-ordering the complete e-nook. I'll send you the remaining effects automatically as they are released. I'll also send the final version of the e-book as a single .pdf file with the preface, foreword, table of contents, etc. added. One last caveat... I may decide to substitute a different effect for "Up, Up & Away." Let not your heart be troubled, though. If I do, it will be because I decided on something even better! Book 1 is, of course, still available either as either a complete volume or the effects can be purchased individually. Bob Day 3
