Hello, Magi:

I like the idea of adding music/sound effects to my shows, and preliminary tinkering has proven promising.

Is there software you can recommend for this purpose? Something that would allow me to blend/manipulate tracks, narration, .wav files, adjust intervals between tracks, etc.?
I've got something like this in Windows Moviemaker, but there must be a stand-alone audio product for that purpose, right?

Criteria: Cost<$200, fairly shallow learning curve (I'm not a techie -- I was a fully formed nerd long before home computing came along), Vista compatibility. Yeah, yeah, I know, get an Apple notebook, but right now I'm playing the hand I got.

Thanks,
Leland

Try Audacity since it is well under your price point. It's free open source software.

Then put that $200 towards your new Mac. Smile

I'm entirely with Scott on this. Audacity is easy & efficient, and when you buy your new Mac Smile there's a version of Audacity for that too, so the inevitable transition will be seamless.
Cheers from Toronto!

As a music professional offering voice-overs, sound effects, to some big name magicians, I'd say Audacity is the best affordable program out there. It can do just about anything you'd need it to. I highly recommend it. Definitely put your hands on it.

Does anyone know if Audacity can convert .wav files to mp3s?

For custom tracks, I am a big fan of smartsound and sonicfire software: http://www.smartsound.com. This program permits you to create any customized clip to the exact length you need with a huge range of tracks and styles.
