I'm not a frequent coin worker, so please forgive me if this is a common question that has been asked many times before!
I want to purchase a magnetic half dollar. Do these coins feel like normal half dollars, or would a specator be able to tell there's a difference? Also, where's a good place to buy one? Thanks for your help! |

A few years ago Chuck Leach (Chazpro) told me he had around 1000 of them in stock. I'm not sure he's still around, but if he is I'll bet he's sell you one (or some).

Is there a Difference? Depends on who you get them from! If you get from one on the big boys there not as much! If they dropped them on the table they might be able to tell them from the sound! Also, what are you going to use it for? If you are going to use it just to put on a Magnetic holdout a steel core coin would be better! They sound better!

Thomas and David - thanks.
David, I want to use it in a Larry Becker routine (Kliptomaniac) in which the magnetic coin will be handled with two other half dollars as they are put into three separate envelopes. What do you think? |

Hi Taylor,
I would Have them hold out their hands and hand them the coins in one hand and the envelopes in the outher hand. And make it stand-up (ie. Make sure there is no place to set stuff down). So they have something to do beside just looking at the coins! And if you are just going to have some hidden steel to find it you might want to see if you could use a steel core coin and a hidden magnetic! |

If you want a quality coin at a reasonable price, get a Johnson. The spectators won't know the difference.

If you DO go with Neighbors' advice to use a steel cored coin, call Jamie Schoolcraft. He has absolutely perfected coring a coin so that it rings as genuine as possible. I know his process, and it involves so much heat that a magnet would be ruined, but a steel core doesn't care about the heat generated in the fabrication.

I have an old Lassen magnetic walking liberty and it rings like a bell. I now have a CSB on order and he has explained that the entire design is different and everything is silver soldered without disturbing any existing patina, etc. The only person that he made one for so far is Chris Korn, according to him. I know I will have to wait a while, but I received notice yesterday that he is back to work now. His father died last week and he was back home yesterday. I wish him well. |
