There have been many versions of the 'any selected card at any number' over the years, some gimmicked, some sleight of hand, some convincing, others not so... but all striving to achieve the effect of having any card selected in the deck to appear at any named number.
Welcome to the mix - The Quest Some features of The Quest: • No sleights, no switches, no needing to even touch the cards as they are dealt... the spectators do the dealing. • No difficult calculations to perform, or difficult formulas to remember. • Only ONE deck in use throughout, no switching or needing to carry around multiple decks. • No gaffed/gimmicked cards in use, so no specially printed cards, no rough and smooth, no short cards, no sticky stuff of any kind etc etc. • It will not be the same card and or number every performance, and no convoluted procedures to come to a number or specific card... card is freely selected and the number is freely named. • No stooges instant or otherwise. • No angle issues, and instantly resets. • The cards before and after the selection can be shown to be different. Aswell as all of the above points, The Quest has to be one of the easiest to accomplish, and is easily within the reach of everyone, no matter there skill level. Just thought I'd give you a heads-up... if you have questions etc, the creator is a member of the Café' and so may chime in to offer more details. |

As this is a new thread, I want to restate/update my opinion about The Quest. As a seeker of the perfect ACAAN, I'm always excited to hear that someone has come up with something new. But even after looking at the newer video which eliminates putting the deck back into the box, this is not the "elegant" ACAAN solution I am looking for.
The ACAAN premise is really a simple one: A boxed deck is placed on the table. It's NEVER again touched by the performer. Someone names a card out loud. Another calls out a number between 1-52. A spectator opens the box and counts to that number. It is the named card. Simple, direct and elegant. Maybe one day someone will figure out how to do this, maybe not. I just want to drive home this most important point: The ACAAN should always be presented as a feat of MENTALISM and not as a "card trick" which is what this effort appears to be with all the HANDLING of the cards! The ACAAN is supposed to be a PREDICTION. And that prediction should be presented as being made by the performer BEFORE the demonstration began. And because of that, there is no reason to handle the cards. It must be presented as I described otherwise it will be dismissed away as a mere card trick, which is what The Quest has reduced this to. In my opinion the ultimate ACAAN is ANY ACAAN that the audience perceives to satisfy Craig's criteria even if those criteria aren't stringently met. For example, if after seeing an ACAAN performance the audience is left with the impression the performer never touched the deck then the performer has succeeded in meeting the "No Touch" requirement even if the performer did in fact touch and manipulate the deck. If the audience thinks there is no way the performer could have manipulated the deck, then in their minds this is just the same as if he never touched the deck at all. Remember, perception is reality and I think magicians tend to forget that. Cheers! ** Bill ** |

You are so correct... I performed the effect "The Quest" a number of times this past New Years Eve and a number of people commented that I never handled the deck. I was SHOCKED as much as they were. The Quest was a huge hit and the effect is stunning yet so very simple to perform. The trick speaks for itself....pure simplicity...The stories told were better than the actual trick!! Thanks Frank Velasco |

Craig/All
If you want to accomplish Craig's version from an above post, I would: Someone picks a card from a face-down fan on the close-up mat and shows no-one their card and re-assembles the deck for you! Have a person write a number and perform a center tear ( or similiar method or marketed device) to peek and know their selected number without them knowing about it. Then you would proceed as usual. Then you could ask the number for the VERY first time and have them count the cards. This would meet your conditions of: Someone picks a card from a fan on the close-up mat and shows no-one! Spectator collects the cards..... Another spectator calls out a number between 1-52. A spectator opens the box and counts to that number. It is the named card. Simple, and direct!! This effect can be achieved with the Quest deck....the handlings to achieve this effect is in the instructions... Thanks Frank |

To be able to perform an 'acaan' as desired by Craig Crossman... well... that's a pretty tall order.
I mean for the deck in case to be tabled/held by the participant, and then for a freely chosen card to be named aloud, followed by a number, and then for the participant to remove the deck and deal down to find there card at the number... all without intervention from the performer at any point... not sure we'll be seeing something as fair as that anytime soon. It is possible, but not 100% guaranteed to work. If you wanted to do this and are not worried about failure, you could just have a whole deck of the same card and psychologically force the card, then it's be at every number lol, though you can't be sure it will always hit. Many different outs would be possible though. Of course the method above also means the deck is completely unexaminable. You could also do what has already been said... use a stooge... but then you will always require a helper. It'd be fantastic to have an acaan that is as fair and clean as is said at the beginning of this post, but those requirements make the effects method almost need to be actual mindreading. For me, the main requirements for an acaan are the following: Card can be any card, as long as the selection process is not forced and it really is free I'm happy. Any number can be named. A full deck, no dupes or gimmicks etc... everything fully examinable. Participant is the one who deals down to the number etc. Now as long as the above are in play I'm happy, though things like a normal deck etc are just me. Set-up is no big deal, as long as it's done before hand. As long as those who are participating/watching believe that there freely chosen card has been found at the freely named number, then the effect has worked. My own acaan does not meet Craigs requirements, with the deck being touched by the performer a cople of times, and though a completely free selection... it's not a freely named selection, and the cards are not in the case before being removed and counted down to... ive had great success with it and due to the routining and presentation, no one has ever questioned any of it, and after it's as if I was merely leading them along on something that they themselves were experiencing... no focus at all on performer. Because of this it seems more real to them... yet as far as acaan's are concerned, it fails on many of the requirements/wants... though ive yet to see an acaan I'd rather perform. So as long as it comes across the way you want it to, and they believe it to be fair and free, it's all good. The Quest is good as far as acaan's go... is it the last word on acaan's... no... does it work and accomplish all the points stated in the ad in regards to workings etc... yes. I popped ot why I was writing this and it feels as if I may be going off track lol, so I'll stop about here... but I feel that you may be waiting awhile before something along the lines of what we percieve to be the ultimate in acaan's comes along. |
