Andrew Wimhurst bursted onto the magic scene in the mid to late 1990’s and made a huge impression on some of magic’s big names including Jack Carpenter, Lennart Green and Darwin Ortiz. MY Magic has just released Mr. Wimhurst’s video from 2001 onto DVD and if you are a fan of excellent magic and extraordinary gambling demonstrations, I highly recommend this DVD. This DVD showcases Mr. Wimhurst’s strengths in three areas of magic: sleight of hand, presentation, and effect construction.
Sleight of hand is one of the pillars of magic. Mr. Wimhurst has mastered many difficult moves (as well as the easy ones) and he handles cards better than most magicians I have seen. He has that “touch” that seems to elude many card handlers. he really does make some of the difficult sleight of hand look easy. Andrew does a wonderful job with his presentations. His character is very likeable, and he gets along with his audience very well. The pacing of his effects is very good and Andrew always makes sure there is practically no dead time. His presentations are well rehearsed and are absent of words you often hear from magic club presentations like “ummm” and “uhhhh”. His effects are crystal clear to his audience and as you see repeatedly on the DVD, it makes a huge impact. Mr. Wimhurst also has a deep understanding of constructing a magic effect and for creating memorable gambling demonstrations. He understands what he needs to do to increase audience conviction. He knows how to get so far ahead of his audience in the effect that they have no chance of backtracking. Andrew’s thinking is solid enough to inspire Darwin Ortiz to create two effects that appeared in Scams and Fantasies with Cards and a Mr. Wimhurst’s 3 Card Monte was mentioned in Ortiz’s latest book Designing Miracles (the same trick that fooled Pete Biro badly). A brief run down of the effects are as follows: Cheater’s Aces – Based on a Doc Daley routine, Andrew opens the show with an excellent display of card control by cutting to a 4 of a kind. This is a nice attention grabbing routine and makes an excellent opener. The sleights used in this routine are well within the beginner/intermediate card handler so you get a huge impact for a little bit of effort. Spread ‘Em – 4 Kings inserted in various places in the deck turn out to be the 4 aces. This is a very nice surprise revelation and a logical follow up to Cheater’s Aces. Ultimate Topsy-Turvy Aces – Based on Ed Marlo’s effect, Andrew’s variation provides more conviction than most other versions (with a brilliant and very bold clean up while revealing the third card!!). As a result the revelations of the aces and the climax are more staggering. Spectator Estimates the Aces – Another Ed Marlo effect but this time Andrew puts it in the hand of the spectator and allows them to cut to the first three aces. As you know, any time you can get something to happen in the hands of the spectator, the strength of the effect increases dramatically. Andrew reveals the fourth ace with an original revelation but he also offers other possible endings in the explanation. This is a very nice routine. Expert At The Bridge Table – Andrew demonstrates how he would cheat in a poker game by controlling four of a kind (using something out of Erdnase). He takes it a step further and I won’t spoil it for you but even if you know nothing about bridge, you will still be dazzled by the climax. The Wimhurst Poker Deal – Not for the squeamish. Andrew shows off his talents by performing a center deal demonstration by really dealing from the center. He repeats the effect and it ends with a double duke climax. How To Cheat at 21 – I still remember the first time I saw this trick. I was fooled completely and couldn’t wait to learn the effect. I have had a lot of fun with layman and magicians alike. It is Andrew’s handling of the ole 21 card trick and it is a stunner. Aussie Cooler – The routine begins as a combination of a series of revelations of a spectator’s peeked card. It ends with David Williamson’s 51 cards to pocket (and a great way to lead into the next effect or any closer). Andrew used this in his walk around shows and it is a nice fun routine to perform. Johnny Mnemonic – This is Mr. Wimhurst’s deck memorization routine. A deck (shuffled by the spectator) is memorized by the performer and then split into two halves. Spectator one selects a card from one half and spectator two selects a card from the other half and they replace their cards in the opposite halves. Mr. Wimhurst then spreads through the deck to determine which two cards are out of sequence and he finds the two selections. Then he ends with a climax where the deck is now in… well, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but suffice it to say the climax is tough to top. The performance section of the DVD is about 30 minutes long and the explanations take about an hour. The explanations are very thorough and are from the front and over the shoulder. Some moves are explained in great detail (i.e. – Versa Switch). Other moves he gives tips on (i.e. – center deal) because there simply isn’t enough time to cover all of the nuances. I enthusiastically recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to see a skillful performer demonstrate entertaining and extraordinary effects. If your New Year’s Resolution is to improve the quality of your magic, or to learn some commercial routines, then you are in luck. Even if you have the original A1 video, the DVD has a better picture, easy navigation to a specific effect, explanation or move and the audio problems from the original have been fixed. The DVD runs about $35 and if you contact Andrew directly, he is also throwing in his “Tradeshow Card to Wallet” routine that is very commercial and puts you way ahead of your audience. (I believe Andrew still posts here). If you have any questions concerning the DVD, send him a PM and I am sure he will be glad to answer them. Anyway, I obviously can’t say enough great things about this DVD so I will stop here and let you guys discover it for yourselves.

I really cant add anything else to the above review other than I completely agree with pretty much everything said. Wimhurst reminds me very much of Darwin Ortiz but he is so much more relaxed and the constant tension that is seen in Ortiz work is nowhere to be seen. Still, both are one of the greatest cardmen alive.

I enjoyed this material very much, although I was a little dissappointed that this was the same material that he released in the '90's. I like the the way he says to "simply" push the middle card from the deck.

I have the DVD sitting here...I'm looking at the unopened box. I'm scared to open it cuz Andrew is a very talented card guy and I'm afraid that...well, I won't be good enough. I'm going to make the leap, I promise, soon, but...I hope I'm worthy.

Thanks for the kind words from Mark, Korttihai and others.
If anyone is interested in the DVD direct from me, the price is the same (mailed in the US) as offered on Meir Yedid's website but I'm including a bonus routine, the effect I used to close trade show sets with, which you can only get by taking advantage of this offer. I have a handful of DVDs left, so drop me a PM if you want to grab a copy. All the best, Andrew

I privately mastered Andrew's tape to DVD a while ago. It took ages but it was really worth it! Great work from an extremely talented guy. Hopefully he will reappear from the underground at some point in the future. The review by Mark is excellent and gives a true flavour of this 'must have' DVD.

I have talked to Andrew on these boards, he's a very nice guy. I only know his material through a routine published in Peter Duffie's ebook, Virtual Miracles. Its a very good addon on a Roy Walton routine from Five Times Five Scotland.

Andrew is one of those guys who will see something with three center deals, four bottom, and sixteen seconds and not be happy because it is beginner stuff.... all that and he is a musician too, man....

Come on Santa, there's some easier stuff on the DVD, method-wise... Don't scare folks off.
I don't care how hard the method is (unless it's impractical) all I care about is the effect on the audience.

Okay...I'm going to take a stiff drink and spend the evening going through this. I just read the sleights you give work on and most are ones that are very useful and I'm looking forward to seeing what tips you have on 'em. I'll let'ch'all know what I think.

Hey! My ol' pal Jody is in the audience! Andrew, was this shot in Sac in 2001?
Real quick. Andrew has put together an excellent routine that is gambling based (thus more likely to be of interest to people) and entertaining. Andrew also has good humor built into it, unfortunately we can't duplicate the Australian aspect, which sells big time in the US. It actually is set up so you can remove parts of the routine if you want to make it fit your abilities and styles. Most of it is within the range of the dedicated card guy. Andrew is so adept at handling the cards it just makes the whole think look amazing and parts of it will just twist your head. Prepare to work on the routine but this is one of those things where even if you don't perform publicly you will be a better card handling at the end of the road. Oh, you can break this down and just do one part of it, like the ace production, or do two parts, make a set, whatever you want. This is higher end stuff and if you want to raise your game this is a good way to go about doing it. Well done, solid magic, and very entertaining. Rubadubdub the proper name is Lil' Gus I believe. |

The 21 Trick is easy, but fooled me badly the first time. hahaha
And the "joke" was great: "Everything you do, but don´t shuffle. Now shuffle" Card Artistry is really amazing. |
