I wonder how many of the older members here remember Forrest J. Ackerman, the editor in chief of the original "Famous Monsters of Filmland", expert on Science Fiction and Horrer in films and other mass media, and very strange and entertaining dude.
Just thought I'd mention that not only is he still alive, but he has a website that's a lot of fun to explore. http://4forry.best.vwh.net/
Woke up.

FM and the old Aurora Monster Models.
A GREAT team!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Nice guy (met him twice), beloved Grand Old Man who actually was there in the middle of the scene when the genre was being invented, knew everybody who counted, and most importantly he introduced everybody to everybody and thereby seeded some immense creative teamings.
On the other hand, his FAMOUS MONSTERS (and don't forget SPACEMEN) publisher was a sleazoid who managed to ruin quite a few childhood dreams (hope you never tried ordering anything from the magazine). |

FM was a big part of my childhood. I don't have my original collection, but my brother snagged a few issues from Ebay and gave them to me, as a nostalgia trip.
Yeah, I was into the Aurora models, too. I had several of them.

I've recollected a few.
I've also recollected most of the early issues of "Creepy" and "Eerie," and a few "Vampirella."

Anybody need an ORIGINAL Aurora model kit of Dracula that's been assembled? There's still one on my shelf from my childhood. Glow in the dark parts still work, too!

Interesting piece of trivia is that Forrest was (I think) one of the first people to attend a science fiction convention in costume! (I think in fact it was the first World Con) I remember seeing a photograph of him in this "futuristic" outfit made up of pajamas with epileuts (sp) and a cape. They had to go out onto the fire escape to take the picture by daylight!

Years after being a collector of FM as a child, I met Forry on a trip to the States. It was one of the highlights of my trip. I just rang him and he invited me up to his house, took me to lunch (wouldn't let me pay - said he owed me for buying FM) and took me on a tour of his museum. After the tour, left me alone to wander around by myself (I was in heaven).
A true gentleman! (Actually, one of his assistants drove me back to my apartment and he was also a magician!) |

Hey! I found it. 1939, first World Science Fiction Convention held in New York City.
