Hey I was thinking about getting a website but I think I will wait a bit more, but one thing I was wondering is if you can buy a domain name and just use the e-mail address for now and then when I am ready, I can get the web site built for it??
Thanks, magico563:-) |

I believe you can with Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) but you'd be better served for researching that kind of information on your own.

The answer is yes. And you can do it with most any hosting company.
Essentially, you would be paying to host a web site, but just not upload the site. Using a simple web interface (mine happens to be called "cPanel") you can create any email in the form of "whatever@yourdomain.com" Prices are dirt cheap, too. The hosting company I use has a package for as little as $4/month for hosting (maybe less with other companies). You can create multiple email accounts, too. Then, when you are ready, you can upload a site, keeping your email address. Plus, you'll have the advantage of being more professional with a yourname.com email instead of a Gmail or Yahoo email. But I was looking around and I found:
http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ It was like £2.99 for 1 year and that's just for the domain name and I was asking if I can use the e-mail adress eg. whatever@mydomainname.co.uk by just buying the domain name and nothing else or do I have to buy something else as well?? Thanks, magico563:-) |

As I mentioned above, you must buy a hosting service. Even if nothing is there.
The internet works by having several (a dozen or so) main "hubs" for all practical purposes. These are the main servers that hold databases with all the "phone numbers" for every website online. They take the email "you@yourdomain.com" and parse it to "yourdomain.com" to figure out where it goes. They look up the name "yourdomain.com" and find the corresponding "IP" address, which would be something like 129.18.208.56 and then sends the email to that address. Once the email arrives at the address, it is like the lobby of a hotel. The front desk looks at the name on the email "yourname" @yourdomain.com and says, "Oh, he's in room 10. Then delivers it to you. If you aren't staying in a hotel or don't have an address, you can't get mail. You don't need a house at that address, just an address. So, as I mentioned, you need to buy the domain and have it hosted somewhere (the address). You don't need to build a house there (your website), but you need the land. So buy the domain and have it hosted. Then use the interface your hosting company provides (like I said above) then you can get email. Scott |

The good thing is it means you can put that address on business cards etc. without having to give out a Hotmail/personal address. The only, and perhaps significant, drawback is that when you send a reply from your Hotmail account your Hotmail address will be seen by the recipient, but there's ways of making that more palatable and at least you'll be replying to people you want to. Again, this feature comes free with the domain name (at least it does at that site).

The answer is yes you can. And if you have a logo designed for example "www.kidmagic.ca Coming soon" Then you could have that on the site and have your email with the domain name.
