How come no one has put a clip of Mr. Electric on Youtube? I would love to see some old clips. Many of the young people have never seen this electric personality of magic. If you have ever met him, you know his energy fits his name. He is like a kid in a candy store.

Most of the video of Marvyn Roy is very heavily protected by copyright. He made a couple of appearances on the Sullivan show, but those are difficult to come by.

That is the only one I have ever found...what a showman and assistant!
Magic is an art. I am merely a tour guide.

The newest technology in LED lights has made it possible for going a step (or two) further than was possible for Marvyn Roy's incandescent bulbs from mouth act. In my "Christmas Lights From Mouth" in The Wizards' Journal #19, I explain (and show in photos) how to bring the trick up to date so it can be done by almost anyone.

The lit bulbs from mouth was a dealer item. Marvyn made it into a miracle with Carol. His presentation is still protected.
There are a lot of problems doing this effect on a regular basis, batteries, broken wires and bulbs. I hope that answers your question Richard

Marvyn sold the Jewelry Act to David and Dania before Carol passed. He has said that he will never sell Mr. Electric though. I believe him and think it is the right thing to do.

Marvyn's Mr.Electric act was one of the most magnificent performances of magic I have ever seen in my life. General Electric must have agreed with this too, as it is my understandinding that Marvyn and Carol had a significant performance retainer from GE.

I got to see it up close at the auction of Les' magic collection a couple of years ago. It didn't sell; the estimated selling price in the catalogue was $10k-$20k and, as I recall, the auctioneer couldn't get an opening bid of $10k. Do you know if D&D bought that prop when they bought the rest of the act? I always assumed Marvyn gave it back to Les when they retired the act, but now I'm wondering. |

I don't think they bought it. They did get a copy of the Jewel box that Carol appeared out of. The original went back to Owens and they made D&D a new one.

Regarding Marvyn Roy and Carol -- I worked with them for a couple of weeks in the Rio Grande Valley back in the middle 1980's. Carol took a liking to my assistant, Diane Johnson, and taught her how to do the hip load.
I saw Marvyn at the WMS week before last. He is not in great shape, but was doing his best to meet and greet all of his old friends. He was a terrific performer and is a really wonderful man. I have great admiration for him as a performer, friend and teacher. Carol was very special, too. I think everyone misses her. Marvyn's version of the lightbulbs from the mouth was considerably different from the "depot" item. The original was only about a dozen or so bulbs. He produced about 50 or so. I think he was set up so that he could produce more on wider stages. Good luck finding the real work on it. It isn't available anywhere that I know of. BTW, the chandelier that he produced at the end of the act was made at Perfect Circle Piston Rings, Inc. by some of Ren Clark's machinists.

Did not know that about chandelier. You are right Marvyn made the light bulbs a miracle but not without it's constant upkeep and problems.
