I was wondering what magicians are doing nowadays with borrowing a quarter to do this effect and switching for the gimmicked coin. Everyone's eyes will be glued to the Eagle on the tails-side of the gimmicked quarter. They will know that you switched it due to the fact that it is more likely you will be borrowing a newer quarter with the different state picture on the tails-side of it.
Even though the date would still be a discrepancy for the heads-side of the quarter (it being now on the tails-side of the "State" quarters), I feel that Johnson should make the quarters with Washington's Head showing on the Heads-side and inserting the cigarette/pen into that side. This would be a lot less obvious than the spectator's viewing the tails-side. What are you magicians doing for this new obstacle of this classic effect??

If you do a stack of quarters routine, such as Leipzig's Pride or Whisper, you can always do that first, chances are you will get an old quarter if you borrow six. Or even pull a couple of old quarters out of your pocket and say you need a few more quarters, this way you are sure to have at least one old quarter when you finish the stack routine, so you are all ready to go with the penetration.
Woke up.

I ask specifically for one of the "old" quarters, and use this as part of my patter. "Did you know what the reason was that caused the government to discontinue these older quarters, blah, blah, blah....they discovered the compound of the metal was weak, etc..." This isn't exactly what I say, but something of that nature. No one ever blinks about it. It gives you a reason to have the quarter you need, and no one thinks twice about it. As long as you have a reason (as with most routines) no one is suspicious. Just my opinion.
I think the reason gaffers do not create the hole on the head side, is because the backs of coins generally have more design work, which camoflages the hole better. |

This is the reason. The front will not look as good as the back. I do not use any quaters any more. I just drill a hole in a half dollar and show the regular coin after an effect and then if a spectator is smoking its the best time to ring it out. And with some good slight of hand this is a great visual effect.

TWOCAN,
I've used this method with different sized coins that were prepared for objects like toothpicks, swizzle sticks, stirrers, etc. Nice givaways. If you ask for someone to show and give you the change they have in thier pocket you may find that they have a couple of quarters. If they have the eagle then use it. If not then do the push thru rather quickly, show it briefly, remove the cig and switch. There was another post about this about state quarters a year or so ago. Too bad the search function is offline right now. |
