A couple books you may want to check out as well:

"Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords" by Perry Marshall and Bryan Todd
== very good!

"Winning Results with Google AdWords" by Andrew Goodman
== good info, a bit dense to read

"Google Advertising Guerrilla Tactics" by somebody...
== The author isn't given...hmmm...but there's some useful stuff here too.

Again, with AdWords, just keep plugging away and working your campaigns, your keywords, your ads, and your landing pages -- it's a complete system that you need to consider, and it's definitely not fire and forget.

I don't want to sidetrack the conversation, but there's some breaking news on the MSN/Yahoo! debacle. Today, Yahoo! voted to reject Microsoft's buyout.

In response, Microsoft said this was "unfortunate" and said it wasn't backing down from the takeover. This is going to get messy real quick. I feel bad for Yahoo!.

Al, you are right in that Yahoo! offers a substantial portion of the web searches and a good deal can probably be had. If they overcome the MS takeover somehow, they'll be better off, and those who have gotten in on the Yahoo ads will be in a good position.

However (get ready for speculation based on my research and connections), if Microsoft gets their hands on Yahoo!, they will no doubt muck it up. They have a history of screwing things up somehow. There's a good possibility Yahoo!'s Flickr and del.icio.us will go down the drain like MSN, Live Spaces (their photo site), Live Messenger, and Live Search.

So I'll now release the conversation back to the number one player: Google and their very successful advertising program. Great info and resources listed by everyone.

Thanks for the book list, Jack!

Not so fast, Scott.
After having had a high pressure sales pitch from a guy with an ax to grind, I would like to know, what is your take on buying AdWords to get traffic on your web site? Does the results justify the expense, or can we get great results for free from a smart search engine placement strategy?

I'm all for using both. I'm of the school of thought that we should diversify, as it were. Having multiple types of advertising and marketing working in synergy.

AdWords by itself will only get you partway there, I believe. Would I spend all my advertising dollars on AdSense? Heck no. Personally, I don't think you can get by with JUST AdWords. At least, not according to what I've tracked in my personal experience.

I don't think there is any one way. We use AdWords with good results. It's good enough to continue with them, but not the end all of advertising. But I also have a content heavy blog, fairly regular podcast or two, print advertising, and a few other little gems.

When one medium slows, the others help prop up the engine that is my business. The nice thing is they are all trackable and tweakable (is that a word?).

I hope that helps!

Best,
Scott

Hey Al,
Can you elaborate on how to do that please?

Thank you

Mrlucky,
I live in the Philadelphia area, and there are over 100 serious jugglers and magicians in my area. I am consistently in the top ten searches of most search engines, which is why I can't share my web masters tried and proven technique. The only reason why I'm speaking up is because I think AdWords is a sucker's game.

I think AdWords can be useful if you target them in your area and market.
I don't use them often, and I have some talent companies that place Yahoo AdWords for me and for my instructional video.

Obviously AdWords does work, or people wouldn't keep using it. I didn't have much luck with it, but I might get Mr. Marshall's e-book and really learn how to use it correctly.

But Al, if what you're doing is working for you, so much the better! Nothing succeeds like success.

Well, yeah, obviously. LOL

My guess is he will reappear in a new incarnation with a new Ralph Kramden scheme.

Be wary about folks that claim to be able to dramatically increase your placement on Google. Google works hard to keep the exact ranking procedure, and when they determine that someone has figured it out, they change it.

Well, this was his second incarnation, and the first left for similar reasons. LOL

I hope he has Amway's number handy.

What is my Google ranking if I don't have a web page, anyhow?

I am constantly amazed at the ignorance shown in some of the posts on this board. Look into the FACTS before posting! AdWords and organic search results are different. AdWords has no correlation with search engine placement, and vice versa.

So on to the meat of my post: I don't know Matthew from anybody. I'm never spoken with him, and I have never seen him perform, personally. All I have seen was a demo video in which he said, "Just like that," probably 30 times (slightly exaggerated) in a 5 minute spot. I was expecting NOTHING new (or even very good, for that matter) from this course, especially after having read and digested some great books on AdWords. But, guess what? I was pleasantly surprised. It does NOT cover some of the advanced stuff that I have read elsewhere, but what it does well is put together a comprehensive course that will get somebody up and running. And this is from an email I received from him:

"Unfortunately, there's a lot of rumors and untruths going around about my book. Nothing was taken from Mark's book. My illustrator did use his book as a reference and some of the images do look similar, but it is not a copy."

So regarding the Mark Wilson course problems, that's what Matthew said. I don't believe or disbelieve him, as I have no true reason to do either right now. All I know is that what I learned in his course was helpful for ME personally, and I am already seeing many more clicks on the ads. I've had a few contacts in the week and a half the ads have been running, and more are sure to come.

Not a copy, huh?

Funny, though. Who was talking about his rip off book, anyhow? Yep, you have no agenda.

Kevin,
Search engine placement gets you hits on your web site for free. AdWords gets you hits on your web site for a fee. The correlation that you can't see should be as plain as the nose on your face.

Well, Al, let me see here. Lots of hits for free vs. lots of hits I can buy. HMMMM...

I'll bet back to you on that. I am not sure I fully understand the proposal. LOL
