Does anyone here do the Longitudinal shift well enough to help a brother out? The shift itself is no problem, and I have a cover that works, but once the packet is shifted I cannot get them to coalesce quickly (in other words, the shift happens in a fraction of a second, but then the packets need to be secretly brought back together, and it's taking me about half a second to do so).
Anyone who can help me, or point me to a source other then the usual suspects (Ortiz, Busby, Erdnase, etc), would be a great help! Luv you guys! Ben

I know... but the advice in this section has always been SUBSTANTIALLY better then the advice in all the others put together. Also, the guys who seem to frequent this section tend to be of more help then the people in the other sections...

Hi Ben,
In one of the edition of Erdnase I have, which is a Gambler's Book Club reprint, there is a section in the back which contains comments on sections of Erdnase from Prof. Hoffmann. I'm pretty sure he covers the Longitudinal Shift. It's not much, but it's something. Then again you may have this edition... I'd try and help you out with some pointers but it sounds like you're further along with this move than me! Best of luck, Michael |

Hey Michael,
I did indeed read the Hoffman notes. Thanks though!

Like an SWE shft? If so, Steve Freeman does this beautifully in the Vernon tapes. I've played around with it for a while and I had the same problem...I solved it by applying more pressure in the fingers that do the shift and as the packet comes up, my hands make a slight movement up (quick jerk) which brings the packets together with the momentum.
I don't think its really practical for gambling or magic though...just a move. |

It shares similar mechanics to the SW, but the deck is held in an elevateds dealing grip, uses a different break and cover (I think), and the packets travel forward (long way) rather then sideways (short way).
I actually have used it for shows, and it has some very interesting properties that make it useful for a magician (but obviously not a card player).

I hardly ever use hops, period. Not that I never have, just that I don't like to.
Then again, I am usually the only one entertained by my card work. Funny, that. CC |

I have never used a hop at the table except in Kalooki which is a game played with two decks. I have played with many but without any serious intention of using them at the table. In fact the dealer cuts the cards in the poker games I play or deal in so there is no need.
In any event I think Bruce Cervon teaches a long free turn pass in Ultra Cervon.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

There are just other ways of getting around the cut. Some of them, I've seen discussed in print before. Others, I have never.
A tool for every job, and every worker, I guess. I always laughed at the fact that in the more "protected" games, it's the one that shuffles that also cuts the deck that he/she just shuffled. It's the 8th wonder of the world. CC |

Man, that's for sure.
I can remember stumbling in, sometimes at dawn, wondering how in the world anyone could not question such a thing as the integrity of the game being put, literally, in the hands of one person at a time. That's not to say that every stationary dealer is constantly putting up hands, we all know how far that is from the truth. But, I believe it does say a great deal about the awareness (or lack thereof) of those who play for stakes. It gives a whole new meaning to the saying that ignorance is bliss. This is why I really wish that some of the guys who actually KNOW the work (there aren't that many) wouldn't be the educational crusaders that they are. Eventually, I'll have to start practicing new stuff to stay ahead of the game. Learning new "moves" and scams feels a lot like homework to me. It's no fun if you HAVE to do it. At any rate, to say that the game protection fellas haven't handed information to the very same clan that they try to stifle would be ludicrous at best. It's all food for thought, any way that you slice it. CC |

When you let the player cut the deck by hand you open up a whole nasty can of worms. Blackjack in particular got beat pretty bad by some novel scams for many years that involved a manual cutting by hand.
I don't blame the procedural change the casinos instituted--the number of mechanics dealing poker is miniscule compared to the possibilities that are opened up when you let the players cut by hand.

At the end of the description of the longitudinal shift Erdnase describes a second variation, this is the one I use when doing this shift and it's much more invisible and faster.
