Matt
You can submitt your web site monthly to google, with a meta tag of your choosing, and climb the google list "FOR FREE" in a few months. I have been in the top ten in my area since 1998 FOR FREE

I have done the submission, I am also changing all of the states on the bottom of the home page to say "Magicians in XXXXX" and linking them to the states page. Everything under the line is on every sing page.
These are techniques I use to get my website http://hudsonvalleymagician.com the top result on google searches for 'Hudson Valley Magician' in matter of days.

Go for it my friend, but under no circumstances should you ever pay for a google (or any other search engine) placement.

I'm not going to pay for placement in the results, but adwords for search keywords.

You should always make your meta tags answer the "what", and "where" questions about you. Mine are "juggler Philadelphia", and "magician Philadelphia"

Adwords certainly can help and I would explore and go that route as part of your overall SEO approach. I also see you have keywords on your pages and that will also be a big help also.
I thank you for putting this together, Matt. It looks clean and polished and you have the right idea for sure. I will try and asisst you as much as I can. Kyle

I would like to let everyone know that the directory is currently making its way up in the search result positions.
It is currently on page two for the search term, Magicians For Hire without quotations To see for yourself, google the term Magicians For Hire and go to page 2. The directory is also in the first page of results for some states using the search term Magicians For Hire in "insert your state"

Who's going to search for a magician by typing "magicians for hire" into Google? It's not phrase they would use IMO.

Actually Futureal is is a common search term for someone who is looking for a magician for their party....
I had someone actually pull up records on it once...

I think Futureal is right "magicians for hire" is not a commonly used meta tag.

Al,
You have a lot of good advice when it comes to magic...but you really don't understand search engines. I have looked, and not seen you high in the rankings, although I assume you often are. I have no idea of your secret, but it is not working good enough. Al, I believe your success comes from other things than your web site placement - word of mouth and business cards. Al, you have been around the block, and you are a known quality, so booking should be easier for you. People probably search specifically for you more often than you realize. You also have a very nice website, so when people find you on the web, they stop looking. Think of how much more bookings you would get if more people found your site? You could raise your prices to a ridicules rate and still get regular work. Metatags are generally useless for getting natural listings. Any time someone says they are important for SE, it is a sigh they are not keeping up with the times. A long time ago this wasn't true, but it has been true for a number of years now. Content management and inbound links are king. I too rely heavily on natural listings. The problem with natural listings is they change. You can be #1 one day and on the second page the next. My solution is to have a large number of interlinking websites that are optimized. It is rare when I don't have at least 5 of the top 10 natural listing for the major key words (magician, your city). I am pretty lazy, so this isn't hard if you know what you are doing. Still, Adwords makes lots of sense. Sure you should work on natural listings, but adwords are much more reliable. It has also been shown that some web surfers mainly use natural listings and others use mainly Adwords. By not listing in adwords, you are losing business you could have. Sure, you pay for hits that go nowhere with adwords. How much money are you missing out on by stepping over the adwords dollar to pick up the natural listings dollar when you could have BOTH? Still, Word of mouth is the best way to get business, and I am sure that you have that rapped up. Yes, you can lose your shirt with adwords, and it would be stupid to get into it without doing the research, or easier yet, having someone else do the research for you. |

Google doesn't even look at the Meta Keyword tag, and hasn't for years...
well at least that's what Mat Cutts Says, but then he is probably a hack who knows nothing about Google (tongue in cheek)

Yeah, some of the information on here is definitely outdated. Meta tags really have VERY little to do with a site now. Instead, it boils down to how the title/description, and most importantly, your incoming links, relate to the keywords on a given webpage.
