Like the crazy aunt locked up in the attic, we know she's there . . . but nobody wants to talk about it in specific terms.

The common magician wants to add theatrical elements to enhance his magic. He does an Al Wheatley "Chop Cup" routine, sponge balls, and coins through the table.

Where should he start?

Seriously, the basics are always a good place to start. Theatrics are added to enhace an effect. More commonly, magi (especially table-hoppers)seem to break into a patter that's so well rehearsed as to sound like they are bored. They lose the audience and themselves. A little emotion can go a long way but a lack of it can get you nowhere.

Whether drama, comedy, or tragedy . . . don't the same rules apply for magic as in any other performance art?
