Hello, all.
Do any US performers have experience booking shows in Canada? I ask because I've heard vague rumors about US acts being turned back at the border because they're seen as taking work away from Canadian performers. Can anyone here speak from experience on this? Thanks! Rory

Same reason I can't work an hour (or less) away from Montreal, Canada, in upstate N.Y., Vermont, New Hampshire etc.
I can't get a "green" card!!! And what ticks us off more is that in many cases there is no one in the local area that can do the same things we may offer. However, all these border towns love it when us Canadians head South to spend our $$$$$, and we are a large percentage of their tourist dollar . You would have to check more closely on your side of the border because we see a lot of acts working up here (at least in the past) in Canada. Maybe it is not quite the same now that the border has been "tightened" up. For me to work in the States, I have to make a special application PER job, and have the sponsor/client do the same on my behalf indicating why they would want to "import" me. And then wait for a reponse. Trade shows are slightly different as you can move into the coutry as an employee of the client. But I believe this is also touchy! Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

It happens more the other way. Customs and Immigration can be known to be picky at times. Used to be that you guys just needed to show the contract and we'd let you in.

Performing artists
Foreign artists coming to Canada to perform, as well as their essential support staff—the people that are integral to the performance—can work without a permit if they are only performing here for a limited period of time and will not be performing in a bar or restaurant. If they will be performing in a bar or restaurant, performers and their staff each need a work permit. Performing artists coming to work in Canada cannot enter into an employment relationship with the Canadian group that has contracted for their services. They must also not perform for the production of a movie, television or radio broadcast. http://www.cic.gc.ca/EnGLIsh/work/apply-......#artists

We have several short run shows in Canada(10-18 days each) in the fall. What can others share here that we may come across both at the border and also while in the country. We will be pulling a 46' trailer.
I have heard that I should leave our main sound rig in the USA as customs sometimes view that as something I might try and sell while there. Seems odd, but I heard it and want to know what others know. Thanks for any insight. Kevin

It may not be the coming into Canada that you have a problem, but getting back into your own country. Make sure all what you are bringing in is well documented.
