Scott,
Yes! Jessica did help Tony! Guys, everyone have a great time, as this is one of the best conventions out there. Period. I know for a fact that guys like Scott, Messing, Ripley, and all the other magical yahoos down in K-town work hard year-round to make this thing happen. and, like I said, I'm picking Lonnie Divine to win the stage comp. And I'm picking Schwab, James Schwab to win the close-up. have a great time!

Hi guys
the Close-up competition results are in! By unanimous decision the winner was Ali Shelley from NEW YORK She performed a very original themed act in a Air hostess costume to very large applause. In second place was John Hromada. He also did an act with a theme (comedy mentalism) as performed by a West Virginian HILL BILLY (in costume) with some very original effects. Again the applause was big. VERY close to John( maybe by one point) was a BLIND magician CHRISTOPHER BALDWIN performing in his first competition. I think he has a great future and will continue. Several other magicians were close in points and I hope these individuals took advantage of the contest rule which allows them to talk to the judges and to see their score sheets. These display their performance in eight different categories. The standard was high and a low score in one category would probably put you out of the running.eg if you did a standard cups and balls routines your originality score would be low, if also you revealed your loading technique, you would not be in the top half of the competitors. If you used patter taken from a video or book you would get a low score.!) or you tried to pass off what you thought was an obscure trick as original but this was spotted by the judges, who collectively have over a hundred years experience in magic you would get a low score in originality.Entertainment value was also rated very highly and ONE criteria here was the volume of audience applause. Anyway it takes a lot of nerve to enter this competition and I thank every one who did and we all hope they learned a lot from this experience. drjeb |

Well ???
You guys have no idea how hard it was for me NOT to come to the convention. More about that later ! but I must say....Tom called me at 12:30am to tell me about the show - enough said..... Regardless - I hope the weekend was a blast and all of you had a BOWL, I mean BALL ! - We got hit with PLENTY of snow (20") so I have more than enough to keep me busy before I head back out on the road Sunday. Best, Steven

I just got home from Winter Carnival...I was only able to make it to Saturday, but, whew...it was a very full day...I'm so sleepy...
Anyway, it was so nice seeing some of my old friends in magic again...David Williamson and Charlie Frye were the absolute highlights of my Saturday...David was "on" onstage or off and my belly is hurting from laughing so much. Charlie Frye is such a talented, funny performer. Whether he was doing some close-up in the dealers room or juggling and manipulating on stage, he was fantastic. That guy has tons of talent, and seems like a pretty nice guy too. Thanks to Ring 58 for another great convention...if Thursday and Friday were anything like Saturday, I missed a LOT...see y'all next year! |

Well the big news is that Bairefoot didn't show, so I guess that officially makes me the winner of that contest.
Congrats to Jason and my good friends Christian & Katalina on the 1st & 2nd place wins in the stage comp! Way to go! I was a little off my game for this one and was furious at myself. After I saw the video and then read the judges comments I realized that I was a lot harder on myself that anybody else was. Really, unless you had seen the act before, or were a musician, you probably wouldn't have noticed. It's what they call "ring rust' in wrestling. I've been on the sidelines rehabbing my back and have to work a litle harder to regain that lost step. But, overall the video I got looks good and I hope to post it soon. I couldn't stop laughing after watching David Williamson. I picked up his dvds, 3 for $60 what a steal! I thought Ali deserved to win because of the originallity of her presentation, it really was extremely clever and I was chuckling through the whole time! My favorite though was the two person act. I was engaged for the entire performance! Overall, it takes some big kahoonies to get up and perform for that many magicians, something I defintally lack and I thought everyone did a great job!
I look forward to next year! |

Big thanks to Ring 58 for a job well done. Very well organized and executed. The lectures were fantastic. My best to you. David Williamson killed me. Tom Burgoon very funny. Fielding West outstanding. Charlie Frye and Company very tallented and entertaining. Steve Beam was the best. Daryl is truly the magician's, magician. The shows were very well done. Had a great time at the Terry Evanswood show, the Close Up Show, and the All Stars Stage show. Robert Jones (Robert, I liked those boots, also!), Lance Johnson, and Mike Edwards; brothers, it was great to see all of you. I wished we had more time to spend together. I saw some great acts in the close up and stage competition. Very tough contest. Very much enjoyed the fellowship with not only the guys from the Nashville and Chattanooga area, but from all over the country. Dan Fleshman was so much fun to be around. Also showed us some great magic. Thanks Dan! Did I say I had a good time? David Williams |

OMG! What a gathering of the clan in Pigeon Forge (fast becoming one of our favorite east Tennessee hangouts). Even the snow showers they ordered for the occasion was fun. We definitely plan to be back next year.
All of the events were amazing. The talent contests showed some great up n' coming acts, as well as seasoned performers. It was great making new friends and visiting with old ones. Congrats to Ring 58 for a job very well done. Bill in Asheville |

I was very pleased with my Close up act( THE WHIP ROUTINE) I had a great time with it, and got a lot of positive feedback on the new ending . which by the way seemed to baffle everyone ( THANKS Big daddy Cool for the tips) Stage Contest again very tough some great acts and my hats off to those winners BDC , Lonnie, Kyle you guys are the tops in my book , nice routines Friday night show, AWSEOME Saturday night show---- Does anybody know if something went wrong with the Mirror Image show???? or were did they have a bad night??? With that said Fielding West , Tom David, my sides still hurt from laughing . Charlie Fry , What a solid act, LOVED all of it , To bad it was not 2hours long I could watch them all night. and Lastly Did You guys see WILLIE THE ENTERTAINER on stage during the paint ball fiasco, unbelievable he showed up at the convention |

Willy The Entertainer is hilarious - only problem is he isn't trying to be funny. He's just that way! He grabbed ahold of me and was talking about a youtube series he's going to be the star of. I can't wait to see that!
Snappity Do! Teen Wolf, Mamma Magic, BDC, Miss Direction, and Lonnylicious inducted a new member into the New Magic Order - The Love Doctor! Welcome aboard brother! |

I had a great time as well! Like I have said many times, of the convnentions I have been to, this is so far my favorite! I had a blast hanging out with all my old friends, and I made many new friends (all of which I hope to see again as soon as possible). It's amazing how fast 3 days can fly by!!!
Suprisingly, I got asked a lot about the banjo...and it's only because I didn't bring it along this time. To all of you who asked, next time I will have it with me. Jason never gets on this board, but I had to once again congratulate my friend on his stage victory...GREAT JOB MAN...I'll get you next time my pretty, and your little dove to! hehehehehe John, Lance, Lonnie, Mamma Magic, I had a lot of fun at the chalet. It was a great relaxation and reflection period. Thanks for having me over for dinner! The NMO will have to gather again really soon! Kyle Jarrard AKA ~The Love Doctor~ |

On 2008-03-08 20:41, drjeb wrote: I was really surprised by the outcome. I really thought that Lance Johnson would place. His routine was solid, entertaining, and jaw dropping impossible - maybe too impossible. A volunteer came onstage, selected a card and signed it. The card was returned to the center of the deck, and with no pass, palm or another sleight of hand, it was handed to the spectator to hold. Then the volunteer selected one of 10 sealed drinking straws. One end was unwrapped and placed in his mouth. After some very funny comedy byplay with a bullwhip Lance declared that the trick was already done and split open the straw to reveal a rolled up card. When unrolled at the fingertips with no switch, it was indeed the signed selection! All weekend magicians were asking how in the world he could have done it. It was fabulous. Equally fabulous was Christian & Katalina's second sight act. Smooth as glass. So well rehearsed it was scary. Rumor has it that they were disqualified because they were full time working pros. Better squash that rumor guys. Although I really liked Ali's act and thought is was strong, I did not think her showmanship or slieght of hand skill was on par to be a 1st place act. I would, however love to have the opportunity to work with her on her performance skills and help make the act what it could be. Oh well, just goes to show that everything is subjective. I learned a lot from own competition performance this year as well - and got the feedback I was looking for to make it even better! BTW, everyone kept talking to me about the Mack the Knife routine, but not one person other than Teen Wolf and Lonnylicious mentioned that my cane work was flawless. Yes, I tooted my own horn! |

What a great weekend! Nice to see the crew and meet some new peeps. Between David Williamson, Tom Burgoon, Fielding West, Willie The Entertainer, and Kyle the Great...my sides still hurt. A good time was had by all. Hope to see everyone in the near future...

The convention was a blast! |
