O.K., I'm not one who buys into conspiracy theories and I don't believe this to actually be true, but seriously, wouldn't it be easy for the show "Deal or No Deal" to be rigged by using gimmicked briefcases? It would be a very simple matter for the cases to contain multiple layers so as to reveal various different "amounts" as needed. There could theoretically be a million dollar sign in each case, as well as several others so that it would all work out.
AND- have you ever noticed how long those girls take to open the case (and often look inside for a moment before the reveal)? What's with that? Maybe they are checking to see if they "worked" the case correctly. Or- maybe they're too dumb to do the necessary mechanics and the cases are operated offstage by remote, and the girls are simply waiting to open the case until the panels have stopped moving . Honestly, I don't believe that the show is rigged, but come on, has any magician watched this and not immediately thought "Gimmicked cases"? Just throwing it out there! Phil |

I've watched it and thought 'stupid show'. There is no need to gimmick and as for the girls looking first that adds to the excitement in the producers minds, rather than watching the case you get to watch the girls face for a reaction. I like games where you have to answer questions not guess.

If you have enough access to rig all of the briefcases, and then remove the cameras after winning, you could probably just look at the dollar amounts.
There'd probably be more money in being a producer, and rigging the cases like a change bag or a card box. So you could control the outcome of every game. I heard someone on the radio say, regarding doing something un-appealing, "I'd rather watch reruns of Deal or No Deal".

There's one flaw in the conspiracy....I've seen Howie let the contestant open the final case. Unless the person is in on it, which is not likely, then the conspiracy is false. Although I do agree it seems like it'd be easy to rig the boxes. After all, they are pretty thick and the girls do take some time to open them, even if the glance is for theatrical appeal. After 50(?) episodes you'd think they'd be able to do it much easier by now.

Several other new shows are following the same tension building techniques (i.e., pregnant pauses before revealing the outcome), but in most cases (no pun intended) I really don't like that. Just get on with it already...

Uhhh, deal or no deal is most likely not rigged. why would they do it? there is no reason to. they have enough money to get rid of like $100,000,000 before they might start worrying.
Have you Amazed?

I worked on gameshows. There's a separate group that is brought in to watch that everything is on the up and up. These people are not paid by the show or station and are there to make sure no one fixes the outcome. You'll see, from time to time, a little note at the end of game shows where there was a portion edited that did not effect the game. Usually that was when either something went wrong while shooting it or one of the "watchers" decided they thought something might be perceived as sneaky and had them redo a particular game.
I wish our government was as carefully watched as they do the game shows. greg

What if you just wore X-Ray Specs? Is there a way to conceal the spiral pattern, and still make them work?

I tried to get on that show..the documentation you have to provide took me over an hour to type out..pages of stuff! Photographs of not only yourself but all 5 of the people and their bios of those you'd want as support. 3 would be chosen from the 5. Then my computer crashed..so I did it again. It crashed just as I had completed it the second time. I gave up.
Howie Mandell was taping a weeks worth of shows in Canada and I think the entire country was trying to get on that show. :O) On another note, I seem to remember that there was some scandal back in the 50's on a game show that was discovered to be rigged. called 21 questions or something like that? They made a movie about it a few years back.It destroyed the game show industry for aprox a decade after that. I don't think it's rigged at all and by what Greg says I'm sure everything is checked. The girls themselves don't know what their suitcase contains from what one said on an interview. Chrystal |

Back in the 50s they didn't think they were rigging the shows because they just thought about them as entertainment. They wanted the best and most exciting show so they would help contestants that had more audience appeal so more viewers would watch. When that scandal came out the game shows were dead in the water for awhile. It took setting up that impartial committee to bring them back so the public knew that no one was being coached or bribed or being told the answers. In many of the shows, like Price Is Right, you can't even walk anywhere near the set for fear that you will get a glimpse of a future prize and now know some early information. In Family Feud, anyone that is related to the family on stage is sat as far from them as possible and someone is always listening to that group to make sure they don't shout out an answer. I was in one Price Is Right show where a guy was tossed out because they found he was carrying a book where he had recorded the prices of prizes that had played on the show before... and I believe the list went for years. They are very strict because they don't want to have the same problem happen again as in the fifties. Now, having said that, I know human nature and I'm sure someone is always trying to sneak something or get away with what they can. Greg

I don't think it is rigged. What would the point be?
I thought of something similair recently as my girlfriend was watching x-factor. The public votes for the acts and the worst two are sent up to the judges who pick one to leave. I'm sure I've forced cards that way... |

Maybe the show would seem more apealing to me if it were rigged. I have tried to watch it a couple of times, each time have switched over to something else within two minuets as could not tollerate the stupidity of the show. It's boring, stupid. The contestants were pulled from the bottom of the gene pools sewer. The show doesn't even have any class.
