Greetings,
I know there is a reference in the back of Three Ropes and a Baby to Roger Sylwester's set up for the Professor's Nightmare. I am wondering if someone tell me were that points (i.e., what is the main source?). Thanks! I learned it from a copy of Heirphant and got permisssion from Roger to include it in my lecture on a rope routine that was left out of Genii (space problem). It sure is IMHO the BEST handling for PN. Might have been Heirophant 4.

Thanks Pete...
I will try there. I am also looking for Roger, as I last saw him in Eugene, Oregon about 10 years ago. Anyone have contact information? John |

Which is probably why Pete stated - IMHO - but it is fantastic. I have watched Roger's move again, and again, yet I still cannot see the move. Roger's move is just for the beginning when you set up the PN. But it is so smooth.

I would never disagree with Pete, but I'm having a hard time understanding what you are talking about.

There is a common move (now) where the small crosses the long. Then, those ends are "juxtaposed" during the misdirection of holding the normal sized rope. Thus allowing you to stretch the ropes as soon as they are layed together, without first putting all of those ends into the hands. Is this what it is you are reffering? Have I lost anyone?
Sorry, I have rope on the brain and am going knots.

Basically you hold the ropes with both hands, each end in one hand. The hands are separated a few inches but in kind of a praying positioin just about chin high.
And you can clearly see short med long. and with no dopey moves you just spread hands apart and the three ropes become all same length. Again IMHO there is nothing smoother or clearer than this move.

Yes, that is the move, but to get to that, there are some nice techniques.
This fellow Jeremy Pei uses the method you describe, but the setup to get there is not standard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCDH9tq_Qgo I humbly agree with your humble opinion and I do like that method of stretching. You say, however that is an Heirophant writeup and how old? It seems to be prevalent in better performances.

Jeremy handles it well, but it IMHO it a little confusing for a spectator. A lot happens, which is probably OK, but for me simple and direct effects, rather than blending from one phase to another is what I like. Thanks for the hpost, idt ws good to see someone demo that effect (which I think I bought a long time ago).

Sanders does that move in fiber optics, I think.

I will have to go back and look, but I know Sander's teaches it in Three Ropes and a Baby. It would make sense that he would include it on that dvd.

Pete, are you sure that Sylwester's handling was in Heirophant? I have the "Legendary Heirophant" and, looking through it, it seems to contain only card effects. Could it be in another publication?
Thanks! |

I have a much cleaner method to get to that "praying position", and that will be included in the final cut of my "Dances with Ropes" DVD.

Looking forward to seeing your method of getting into the praying position... one of the reasons I ordered the DVD (not to mention all the great comments I have been hearing around here.)

Please don't mind the quality of this, or the fact that I just fell out of bed to do this for someone who wanted to get away from a false count... I did it yesterday for someone else on another thread who also discussed this... if the click doesn't open it, the right click and save target.
10mb http://stagetricks.com/separateequal.MOV This is one of the steps that will be in the final cut (not on the ones I sent out). It uses a pick up move and gets you to the PN position to stretch the rope.

I'm not familiar with the routine by Sylwester but I learned the move you described from Steve Dawson at a magic convention in Portland, Oregon in (I believe) 1988 or 89'. I got a copy of it is his lecture notes as well. He was teaching it as a way to throw off magicians. The move was made as you display the medium size rope while lowering the long and short pieces in you other hand. Gravity completes almost the entire move for you! I've been doing it ever since! I really enjoy seeing professor's nightmare routines that are unique!!

Is Steve still around doing lectures, I did a lecture at his shop in San Jose years ago (83')(if its the same Dawson). He was great.

A version of this short cut is published in a Karroll Fox book that was published by Supreme Magic Co. (defunct) in England. I think it was in his 1st hard bound book, he published 3 books thru Supreme. The book is out of print currently.
