Man it took me months of over and over and over and over, when I could finally do the entire routine (With my little panache's) I decided to do Whit Haydn's Comedy Ring Routine.... I haven't picked them up since.
But with me the key was doing it over and over and over and over over and over and over and over
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I find that it doesn't matter which direction the ring is in as far as doing the link. The rings do swing more with one orientation than the other.
Another thing to try is to pull up move the ring slightly forward (maybe a centimeter), and then move straight downward to do the link.

The ring that is to be linked needs to be directly perpendicular with the ring in hand.

For those who have suggested taking out the move, I agree, but most don't offer an alternative. I attempt the move and when it works, great. When it doesn't I don't repeat it, a failed link just looks like you made the rings jingle. The audience don't know anything is wrong. (The next bit is really diffficult to explain but here goes): The following asssumes you the holding the rings in your right hand. The left hand now extends towards the lower ring, thumb at the bottom, palm facing the spectators. Grasp the bottom ring on its left side and without lifting the ring rotate the palm to face you. as you do this the the bottom edge of the ring rotates upwards and contacts the ring above right at the gap. pass this through the gap and hold the ring suspended in space before dropping it onto the key ring. This move can be done really slowly as it is a silent link which makes great use of the covered gap aspect of the one handed link position.
I am not sure how well this reads, but please try it out, you might like it. I found that I am happier and more relaxed trying the one handed link BECAUSE I have an out if it doesn't work as opposed to worrying about it failing and then not doing it at all. Dusty
